World Glaucoma Week (WGW) has officially started, and we are standing with the almost 380,000+ Australians living with glaucoma.

A diagnosis can feel overwhelming but with early detection, ongoing treatment, and the right support, vision loss can often be slowed or prevented.

Remember, Glaucoma Australia is here to help at every stage of the journey - providing education, free support from our Orthoptist Patient Educators team, and trusted resources for patients, families and clinicians.

As part of , leaders across the global eye care community are calling for greater awareness and action.

As shared by Fotis Topouzis, President of the World Glaucoma Association: “Every year hundreds of activities have been performed during WGW to fight glaucoma blindness worldwide. WGW focuses on bringing patients, eye care providers, health officials, and the public to join forces in organizing public awareness activities. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible and preventable blindness while it is well known to be highly undetected. Most people with glaucoma are not aware of it and they have no symptoms until is too late. The goal is to alert people to have regular eye examination to detect glaucoma as early as possible and hence get treatment to prevent blindness. The WGA invites the Global Glaucoma Community to be part of this initiative organizing activities towards our common goal”.

Glaucoma - Peru

El glaucoma no es una sola enfermedad, sino más bien un grupo de enfermedades que resultan en daño al nervio óptico, el responsable de llevar los estímulos visuales recibidos por los ojos al cerebro.Con el nervio óptico lesionado, las imágenes tomadas por los ojos no llegan al cerebro y el resultado es la ceguera.El glaucoma es la principal causa de ceguera irreversible en el mundo.El problema del glaucoma es el hecho de ser una enfermedad silenciosa ya que el simple aumento de la presión intraocular no es capaz de provocar síntomas. Dolor en los ojos solamente ocurren, en general, cuando la presión está muy alta, normalmente por encima de 40 mmHg.
