What is HIV and AIDS?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system.
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the advanced stage of HIV when the immune system becomes very weak.
Not everyone with HIV develops AIDS, with treatment, many people live long and healthy lives.
How HIV is transmitted? HIV can spread through:
~ Unprotected s*x (vaginal, a**l).
~ Sharing needles or syringes.
~ From mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding (but preventable with treatment).
~ Blood transfusion with contaminated blood (rare nowadays due to screening).
How HIV is NOT transmitted? You cannot get HIV from:
- Hugging, kissing, touching, or sharing utensils.
- Sweat, tears, or saliva.
- Mosquito bites.
- Toilet seats, pools, or casual contact.
SYMPTOMS
HIV often has no early symptoms, but some may experience:
* Fever. * Tiredness
* Sore throat. *. Rash
AIDS symptoms can include:
* Extreme weight loss. * Frequent infections
* Night sweats. *. Persistent fever
PREVENTION
❤️ Use condoms correctly and consistently.
❤️ Get tested regularly.
❤️ Avoid sharing needles.
❤️ Take PrEP (a preventive medication) if at high risk.
❤️ Pregnant women with HIV should take ART to protect their baby.
TREATMENT
✅ HIV is treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART).
ART keeps the virus low in the body.
✅ People with HIV on effective treatment can live normal, healthy lives and cannot s*xually transmit HIV (known as U = U → Undetectable = Untransmittable).
