In preparation for the upcoming observance of National Rare Disease Week Philippines (February 22-28) and World Birth Defects Day - Philippines (March 3), the Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders (Civil Society/Patient Organization), Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health - Philippines (Youth), and the Institute of Human Genetics - NIH, UP Manila (Government/Academe) jointly open the call for partner youth organizations for the these health observances in the Philippines.

This invitation is open to all interested volunteers (individual), youth organizations (school-based or community-based) and institutional partners.

Registration for participating youth organizations is FREE and will be open until 10 February 2026.

Writing the wrong year on the NBS filter card can cause delays in the release of results. Hence, we would like to remind NSFs to be careful when filling out the year of birth and year of collection.

𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗠 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱-𝟬𝟬𝟴 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

The Newborn Screening Reference Center released an updated list of clinical information significant to the disorders being screened in the expanded newborn screening panel. Samples with any of these information written on the filter card, that is related to a specific ENBS disorder, will be tested in duplicate for faster and more accurate release of the initial screening result. If the results are outside normal limits, current protocol will be followed. However, if the results are within normal limits, the patient will be referred to the attending physician (AP) or specialist for further evaluation.

Please see the table below for the disorders and corresponding significant clinical information. If any of those where observed, kindly WRITE IT ON THE FILTER CARD under the portion BABY’S STATUS (No. 5 Other relevant clinical information).

The Newborn Screening Center–Central Luzon has concluded its sixth and final batch of the Sample Quality Orientation and Laboratory Tour, which included seven different Newborn Screening Facilities.

Through the initiative of the Program Manager and Program Development Officers, together with the Laboratory Manager and QA Officer, this activity aimed to guide NSFs in preventing the collection and submission of unfit and unsatisfactory samples, thereby strengthening quality care and ensuring better outcomes for every newborn. 🩸✨

Contamination is a common cause of UNFIT samples, leading to delayed testing, recall, diagnosis, and treatment.

✅ received in the NSC-CL not more than 14 DAYS after collection
