PetCare Unlimited Know-Hows:
CAT URINATING OUTSIDE THE LITTER BOX
ILLNESS OR STRESS?

One of the reasons that cats are popular companion animals is that they are clean.

When compared to dogs, most cats require little, if any, toilet training. The ability of cats to reliably use litter facilities provided within the home makes it easy for owners to go out to work and spend time on their leisure pursuits without worrying about whether the cat is desperate to toilet.

Yet one of the common problems encountered by cat owners is the cat who urinates outside of the litter tray.

This is very distressing for owners, who don't appreciate cleaning up after their cat.

So, why might a toilet trained cat urinate outside of their litter tray?

One reason is the presence of an underlying physical condition.

Urinary tract infections or inflammation can cause painful urination, which may cause cats to associate the litter tray with a painful experience.

Some cats develop stones in their urinary tract (uroliths).

Other painful conditions like arthritis may create a similar negative association, or make it difficult for cats to climb into a tray.

Diseases that cause a marked increase in thirst, such as diabetes and kidney disease, increase urine volume.

For this reason, it is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out a medical cause.

Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and potentially urine and blood tests.

In some cases, additional tests including imaging are required.

Diagnosis and appropriate treatment may resolve the problem.

Another reason for house soiling is territorial marking.

Even entirely indoor cats may feel threatened by other animals in the household, human household members (including those that are over-exuberant in showing affection to cats), or cats outside of the household.

My own cat Sky once urinated around the house in response to a neighbour's cat looking through the window.

Cats also have specific preferences about litter trays - as humans do about their own latrines.

It can be because your cat dislikes or is averted to the litterbox. Inaccessibility is one obvious reason why a cat might start going elsewhere. Other causes could include the following:
• The litterbox has not been cleaned frequently enough for the cat’s taste.
• There are not enough litterboxes for all the cats in the household.
• The litterbox is too small, making it more difficult to use.
• The box has a hood or a liner that bothers the cat in some way.
• The owners are trying a new brand of litter, and the feline simply does not like it.
• The cat prefers other surfaces, such as carpets, potting soil or bedding, over the litterbox.

Every case requires individual trouble shooting.

I have chatted with other cat owners and found out that their cat began urinating outside of the litter tray when the litter tray was moved, another cat was introduced, a new baby arrived in the household, renovations began or the type of litter used was changed.

You can assist your veterinarian by telling them when your cat began to urinate outside of the litter tray, the number of animals in the household and how they behave towards each other.

It is also important to mention the location and types of litter trays available, the type of litter used (and whether this has changed) and the location of other critical resources in the household.

From a cat's perspective, critical resources include food, water, favourite sleeping places and entry and exit points.

After medical problems are ruled out, remove stressors from a cat's environment, while ensuring that litter tray facilities are up to scratch.

However, never clean previously soiled sites in the house with chlorine or ammonia.

While they smell better than cat urine to humans, they smell like very strong cat urine to cats - who may then be moved to mark the site with their own scent.

PetCare Unlimited Know-Hows:
CAT COLDS AND REMEDIES

Cats can catch colds just like people, displaying similar symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose.

Cat colds are an upper respiratory infection (URI) caused by bacteria or a virus. It is not contagious for humans, but easily transmits between cats, especially in compact conditions. So if you've boarded your cat recently and they now have a cold, it's likely your pet was near another cat suffering from a cold.

Cat Colds: Signs & Symptoms
sneezing
sniffles
watery eyes
runny nose
mild fever

More Severe Symptoms
reduced appetite
coughing

How to Care for Your Sick Cat
If your cat has a cold, you can help them feel less uncomfortable by wiping their runny nose with a clean cloth, and runny eyes with a cloth and saline solution. She might not appreciate the gesture – my cat hates having his face cleaned by anything other than his own paws – but he’ll appreciate the lack of runny gunk on his face, hopefully.

You can also run a humidifier so the air isn't too dry. If you don’t have one and like hot showers, let your cat come into the bathroom with you so the steam can help her breathe better. You can also get nasal drops for your cat to clear the congestion.

If your cat seems to be stuffed up, making breathing a little difficult, secure them in their pet carrier, put a bowl of hot water in front of the cage, and cover both with a blanket for about 15 minutes.

It's important for your cat to continue to eat and drink so they can get better quicker. Food that is warmed up and easier to swallow might make this process more appealing for them.

f your cat isn’t eating, he’s probably also not visiting his water bowl too often. Cat dehydration is a common side effect of the cat cold so you may want to bring the water to him.

And easy way to check for signs of cat dehydration is to pinch a your cat’s skin on the back of his neck. Pull it up gently and then let go. If it snaps back immediately, he’s fine and hydrated. If it goes down slowly, he needs more fluids in his body.

Again, chicken, beef or fish stew (basically just the meats stewed in water to create a soft broth) is a good way to give your cats both nutrients and water in one go. So is canned cat food.

If your cat is reluctant to even get up and wander on over his bowl, you may hand feed your cat.

Try scooping up a small amount of moistened or wet cat food between your fingers and placing it on your cat’s tongue. You can also go for a feeding syringe to gently make sure your cat is getting enough to eat without forcing the food down.

They also need to stay warm, so place an extra blanket in their bed or favorite area to curl up.

DO NOT EVER GIVE HUMAN COLD MEDICATION (or any medication without the advice of your vet) to your cat. Always speak with your vet to see what they recommend for your pet.

How Can You Prevent Cat Colds?
If you have multiple cats and one of them starts developing a case of the sniffles,? isolate that cat from the other cats so that the infection won’t spread. (Yes, even if the cat is used to having the run of the house and gives you a fight over being quarantined!)

Your cats should always have access to clean food and water and a clean litter box. Your house should also be kept clean to prevent an environment in which germs can breed.

If you give your cat a bath or if they get wet for any reason, dry them off as quickly as possible. You might also consider asking your vet about vaccines that can prevent infections.

When to Seek Veterinary Care
In most cases, cat colds are harmless and will go away within 1-2 weeks. You do need to monitor their health however, and if there is no sign of improvement by the fourth day, you should make an appointment with your vet as a persisting cold that does not get treated properly may develop into pneumonia.

As with humans, it's important to be careful with older cats, kittens, and cats with other conditions that may make them more susceptible to the effects of a cold. This is especially true of cats that are nursing, or that haven't been vaccinated.

In any case, if your cat begins coughing, has difficulty breathing, or stops eating, they need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Why I love Sky, let me count the ways...

Cats are nice. They really are. And I know that dog lovers may say otherwise, but cats have some incredible qualities and are just as characterful as dogs. Well, I know my Sky is, that's why I literally dote on him the most. I can't help myself, that face is just too cute. And if there's ever an opportunity to talk about him, then you can bet I will.

Let me tell you all about the life I have with Sky.

1. He's inquisitive. Like a whole lot. Anything you're doing? Yeah you can bet he'll be there.

2. That face. I mean, do I even need to say more?

3. Cats do give affection. Yes really. I love when I'm dozing off to sleep, and he thumps onto the bed, and wants to lay beside me or on my pillow for a little snuggle. Those precious moments can't be disrupted with - whatever time of night.

4. I think he likes me. I do. Well, I know he's missed me when I've been gone.

5. Have you seen those ears? Oh those ears. Ironic that they're big yet he likes to ignore me a lot...

6. The way he creeps. Like if I'm in bed and I catch him intently looking at me, like he's about to murder me, such a creeper.

7. He's more than just a cat. I can't quite put my finger on it, but you know when they just know if something isn't right? Well, that. If ever I'm feeling down or lonely, it's like he knows and will always sit beside me or appear extra friendly. That's probably my favourite thing about him.

8. I'm 100% biased, but he's cute. That is all.

9. Sky always likes eating. And for that, I like Sky. Because food is life.

10. I like how he meows. It's not really a normal meow, but he's pretty vocal and will wander around meowing at random things.

11. How he makes me feel as I walk in the door. There really is nothing quite like coming home and being greeted by that little face of his. That look in his eye is as though I am his world, but I know deep down it's just because he wants me to feed him...

12. Sometimes he's stubborn. Oh yeah, he can.

13. He keeps me on my toes. Like, busy working on the computer? Oh cool, he'll just sit on the keyboard, or block the monitor and stop you. He also takes up a whole lot of space on the bed for such a small animal. He sure keeps me busy. But I wouldn't have it any other way (except maybe the 2am wake up call...).

15. And most of all, I like the way that he's not a normal cat. He's my cat.

As they say - pets are the family we choose. And damn right about that. I honestly don't know what I'd do without him.
