EYE MYTH OR FACT? 🧐
"Reading in dim light will permanently ruin your eyesight."
THE VERDICT: MYTH! ❌
You can all breathe a sigh of relief (especially if you were the kid hiding under the covers with a flashlight)!
The Science: According to a widely accepted consensus in ophthalmology and studies reviewed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, reading in low light will not cause structural or permanent damage to your eyes.
Why did we think this? Because it does cause temporary discomfort. In dim light, your eyes work harder—your pupils dilate to let in more light, and the muscles that focus your lenses have to strain more to maintain clarity. This leads to common symptoms like tired eyes, headaches, or dry eyes, known as asthenopia or simple eye strain.
The fix? Rest, a bit of blinking, and better lighting. But you are not damaging your vision.
