What will you do if you have breast lump?
First of all, don't get panic because more than 90% of breast lumps are benign. But it does not mean that you ignore it because of the small possibility of cancer. So the first thing to do is to seek consult from a medical doctor preferably a general surgeon who treats breast lumps. And what will you expect during medical check up?
1. History will be asked to identify any risk factors of breast cancers such as family history of breast cancers.
2. Physical examination will be conducted to look for signs of cancer such as redness, dimpling, ni**le retraction and discharges.
3. A breast ultrasound or mammogram may be requested depending on the assessment of the doctor. It can detect non- palpable breast lumps, determine if the lump is solid or cystic, and may identify if it is cancer or not.
4. A breast biopsy will be done to confirm the diagnosis wherein a tissue sample will be taken for histopathologic examination. Biopsy procedures include fine or core needle biopsy, incision and excision.
5. Once the diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy, surgical plan will be recommended which is excision for benign breast lumps and mastectomy( removal of the breast) for breast cancers.
So what is the prognosis?
1. For benign breast lumps, after excision, the patient is cured with no further treatment.
2. For breast cancers, it depends on the stage of the cancer. For early stage, the survival rate is very high up to 100 %. For advance stage, the survival is very low as 10%. That's why early detection and prompt treatment are the keys for the successful management of breast cancers. Additional treatments include chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapy.
