Voices of the Fallen Heroes and Other Stories by Yukio Mishima
Currently reading this beautiful collection of stories by Kimitake Hiraoka, more popularly known by his pen name, Yukio Mishima. This collection of 14 short stories was written in the 1960s, the final decade of this famous Japanese author, poet, playwright, and ultranationalist.
One of the best stories, The Peacocks, tells about the slaughter of 27 peacocks in an amusement park, of which Mr. Tomioka, an elderly, seemingly innocuous man who has a fascination for the colorful beauty of peacocks, becomes an unlikely suspect. In his mind, the slaughter of the peacocks is an intertwining of sensual beauty and destruction, and that only by being killed will a peacock be complete. But is he the perpetrator? The ending is both dark and disconcerting.
Mishima's writing is rich in ornate language, detailed descriptions, deep symbolism, evocative imagery, and heightened drama and emotion. Sadly, Mishima's contributions to the world were cut short at age 45 when, after orchestrating a failed coup attempt, he performed seppuku, a Japanese ritual su***de of disembowelment using a short sword.
