You know what saved me from my child’s non-verbal years?

Sign language. That’s right, sign language.

Her tantrums weren’t just because she has a behavioral problem. It was more on speech and language barrier that I didn’t understand at first.

When I finally came to my senses that although she understood what’s happening but she couldn’t communicate - expressive language, as we call it. It was a “eureka” moment for me.

I was crying that day because she would just follow me around and throw a fit but I am sure she wanted to say something. I looked at her straight in the eye and asked, “What do you want, darling? Can you please tell mommy?” and seeing the look in her eyes I know she is either sleepy or hungry. Those are basically a human’s basic need.

So when she learned the sign language for “hungry”and “sleepy”, a few minutes after, she tapped me behind my back and motioned her hand in her tummy in a circular motion just how I taught her. I hugged her tight and said, “But you just ate? You’re still hungry?” With a nod on her head, I finally was able to communicate with her.

I do understand the confusion and the helplessness that parents of speech delayed children go through. And with this information, I hope we can be an instrument to parents and families that we can bridge that gap. Each child has their own communication struggles. And by supporting your children with our visual cues and responsive communication techniques, we can turn the frustration into connection - making them communicate with confidence in their own time and way. ❤️❤️❤️

Have you ever noticed your child behaves differently at school or at crèche than they do at home?

It can be confusing, right?
You hear from teachers how polite, patient, and cooperative your child is and you think, “Are we talking about the same kid?”
Then at home, they melt down, argue, or seem like a completely different little person.

But here’s something every parent needs to remember:
👉 They’re not being fake, they’re being safe.

Children often hold it together all day in environments where they need to follow rules, share space, and manage big feelings quietly. They put in so much emotional effort trying to “do the right thing.” By the time they get home, which is their safe space, all that bottled-up emotion finally has somewhere to go.

You’re not seeing the “worst” of them;
you’re seeing the truest version of them.

Home is where they feel most loved, most accepted, and most secure. That’s why they release their stress with you. It’s not disrespect, it’s trust.

So next time your child has a meltdown after a “great” day at school, try to see it for what it really is:
A child saying, “I’ve been strong all day… can I fall apart with you?”

Be their soft place to land.
Listen. Hug. Help them regulate before correcting.
Because even though they act differently, both versions are real and both need your love and understanding.

You’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re their safe person and that’s something to be proud of. 💪
