Dear Valued Patients -

The COVID-19 Pandemic has turned the entire world upside down. What used to be the norm no longer exists. We are all aware that Covid-19, which causes severe respiratory distress, is principally transmitted through saliva droplets when coughing and sneezing. Recent scientific findings also suggest that mere talking, which creates droplets of saliva which can be suspended in air for a few minutes, can also transmit the virus (https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-spreads-droplets-aerosols-p**p-2020-5). Dentists work inside your mouth, dealing with saliva all the time. We are considered by the WHO and the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) as a VERY HIGH RISK Profession when it comes to infectious diseases especially with the highly-contagious and proven to be fatal, Covid-19.

Wearing PPE, face shield, goggles as well as acquiring certain equipment and materials to reduce if not totally eliminate the possible spread of the virus inside our clinic has become an URGENT NECESSITY. We know that you understand that we are trying our best to protect you against this deadly virus as much as we need to protect ourselves and our dental team. We all have families to go home to.

In this regard, a minimal and REASONABLE increase in our professional fees is unavoidable as well as new policies implemented to protect us all. Please call for an appointment and feel free to discuss with us any concerns you may have regarding these new policies.

Despite this trying time, we remain deeply committed to bring you the best dental treatment possible according to your oral health needs.

This is a guideline for dentists issued in a medical/dental institution in an affected country. The name of the institution/country will not be mentioned here as requested by our colleague who shared this.

"We would like to strongly recommend the dental profession to strictly adhere to the infection control principles and measures relevant to the dental practice as promulgated by the (name of institution). Proper wearing of surgical facemasks, personal protective equipment, and hand hygiene should be strictly observed. Moreover, the following measures are highly recommended:
1. Pre-treatment mouth rinse with chlorhexidine;
2. Use of high volume suction; and
3. Rubber dam isolation for all aerosol generating procedures.
In addition to standard precautions, administrative control is important to identify possible infectious cases and prevent the transmission of the disease in the dental setting. Temperature should be taken, questions about relevant symptoms, traveling and contact history should be asked for attending patients and clients. Patients with fever or any relevant symptoms MUST wear face masks and be recommended to attend medical care immediately. *No aerosol generating procedures should be provided to them.
In situation when there is evidence or imminent risk of sustained community level outbreaks, the following additional measures are highly recommended:
1. Postpone all non-urgent treatment;
2. Suspend all aerosol generating procedures unless rubber dam isolation
can be applied."

When there is evidence of pandemic of the Novel Coronavirus Infection, private dental settings should consider the risk of widespread transmission and limit their service to minimal level.
