The KalaBasa (Kalaro habang Nagbabasa) program at Patchworks Playschool by providing opportunities for storytime and doing related activities is creating bookworms out of these kids. Look at how they read different books. Even looking at pictures within is educational and builds a connection to the environment. They see images on a page and link them together to make sense of what is happening. This is how concepts and cognitive skills build - through interest and sustained attention!

Modeling reading during consistent routines like Story Time, as well as access to books during Free Play also develops reading behavior. Reading behavior refers to the skills involved in learning how to read, including holding a book upright, turning the pages one by one, reading words from left to right and using one’s finger as guide while reading. 🧡💙💜

Free play is such a valuable opportunity for socialization that is often taken for granted. Autistic and other neurodivergent children often have difficulty socializing in a typical and traditional school environment, and sometimes this causes them anxiety when they feel they do not belong. But when they are placed in a safe space where neurodiverse-affirming practices are done, they gravitate toward each other naturally. Look at how these Patchworks Playschoolers engage in parallel play during their free play just before circle time. Some have formed bonds among themselves. We are so proud of how they have learned to interact with each other in their own unique ways. 🧡💙💜
