-EJP

Isang makabuluhang pagdiriwang sa Araw ng Kalayaan!

I never thought that during this quarantine, things would be very difficult for me. I felt anxious about what was going on, and I felt really down to the point of experiencing depression. It was hard for me to deal with my fluctuating moods even though I had mood stabilizers to help me. I felt like I had no one to talk to, like I was alone. I was overwhelmed with my negative thoughts.
I tried various activities like working on my school requirements, but I would end up losing motivation and procrastinating instead. I could not take it anymore so I started to talk to my friends and my boyfriend about what I was feeling, and it helped me cope with my feelings.
My friends listened as I disclosed about my negative thoughts. They gave me supportive/encouraging messages which reminded me that things will be okay. My boyfriend, who dealt with my mood swings every night, helped me to calm down by letting me do a breathing exercise. He also told me that I needed to talk to my counselor and my mom about it. I talked to my counselor and she guided me in my thoughts and feelings properly. My counselor helped me consider alternative coping mechanisms since I can't be with people due to the lockdown. She also gave me messages which calmed my thoughts down. My mom was also there o listen to my worries, and I was just glad that she did. There was even a time when she asked me to accompany her to the grocery, and it made me feel better to be in town again.
During the ECQ, it was just hard to deal with my mental health condition - having to experience manic episodes and not being able to sleep for 3 days because my mind was very active. Due to these, my body always felt tired.
Going through this was difficult, but then I realized that I had my friends, my mom, my boyfriend and my counselor all along. I had people to talk to and share my negative feelings with. There were also many other things that helped me get through like baking, reading books, watching Netflix with my mom and playing with my dog.

Insight: It's okay not to be okay at times. But you will always have people who will be there for you. You just have to muster up the courage to speak up and share the burden to these people who truly care about you.

Who doesn't love music? Wherever we are, may it be in the grocery, coffee shop, or simply our room, no matter what song is playing, we can't help but hum to the melody, dance to the beat, or sway to the rhythm. We may not recognize it but music influences our thoughts and feelings. Depending on our liking, studies suggest that music helps improve mood, reduce stress, lessen anxiety, energize the body, improve motivation, provide comfort, and manage pain. What are you waiting for? CREATE, ENJOY, and SHARE your own music playlist to spark encouragement.

There are times when I feel like I’m drowning in severe depression and during those moments, I feel like the pain is just too real and heavy for me to handle. Negative thoughts flood my mind like “I could’ve prevented myself being in such situation” or “I could’ve diverted my attention to other things the moment that I saw it coming”. But I always strive to interrupt these thoughts by telling myself that it is okay to feel and acknowledge negative feelings as long as I know that these are not the bases of my worth and of who I am. I bear the pain for as long as I need to as I remind myself that “This, too, shall pass.”

When was the last time you asked someone how he/she is doing? Studies reveal that showing care and kindness to others and oneself can actually be really rewarding, physiologically and mentally. Demonstrating acts of caring and kindness is said to boost the immune system, improve blood pressure, and slow down aging. Moreover, it improves one's mood, relieves stress, stimulates feelings of calmness and increases happiness. Making others and yourself feel good allows you to have a better or more optimistic outlook in life which leads you to having good mental health. Letting someone know you care for them or even caring for yourself may not be easy. Why not challenge yourself and courageously ask someone how he or she is doing, or tell a family or friend how much you love them, or just let yourself watch that movie you've been wanting to watch for months now? It will not only benefit you but the other person as well. Show you care and spread that kindness.

KINDNESS is choosing to understand delayed orders over getting mad for being right. HOPE is nurturing your body today because you know there's still tomorrow. ACCEPTANCE is not forgetting about the damages but deciding it won't control you anymore. And EMPATHY is listening to people waiting to be heard by hearts that genuinely care.
