9 PRACTICAL ADVICES TO AVOID TOXIC PARENTING
# 7 WILL CHALLENGE YOU

I am no parent, I don’t even have a kid, but I have parents, siblings too who are married and have kids, and have friends who became a parent too, I don’t have the right to talk about parenting, I am not expert as to this field, but as I watch my friends and siblings parenting their kids I was force to open my mind and heart that parenting is not easy, as well as good parenting is a hard work.

Is there even a requirement on how to be a good parent?

A good parent is someone who works hard to make decisions in the best interest of their child.
Being a good parent does not require perfection. No one is perfect, no child is either perfect, in setting our expectations we have to keep this in mind.
Fruitful parenting is not about managing perfection. But it doesn’t mean that we will not work towards that goal. First is to set high standards for ourselves, and second to our children, we serve as a role model to them.

HOW TO BE A CHEERFUL PARENT

I. BE A SAFE HAVEN FOR YOUR CHILD
By being responsive and sensitive to your child’s need, you are letting your child know and feel that you will always be there for them. Support and accept your child as an individual. Be a warm, safe haven for your child to explore.
Children raised by parents who are consistently responsive tend to have better emotional regulation development, social skills development, and mental health outcomes.

II. TALK WITH YOUR CHILD AND HELP THEIR BRAINS INTEGRATE

This is the importance of communication. Talk to your child and listen to them carefully. You will have a better relationship with your child and when there is a problem your child will come to you easily by keeping an open line of communication.
But this is another reason for communication – you are helping your child integrate different parts of his/her brain.
Integration is similar to our body in which different organs need to coordinate and work harmoniously to maintain a healthy body, when different parts of the brain are integrated too, the brain can function harmoniously as a whole, meaning the result will be fewer tantrums, more cooperative behavior, more empathy and better mental wellbeing. To do this, talk through troubling experiences of your child. Ask your child to describe what happened and how he/she felt to develop attuned communication. You don’t have to provide solutions. As a good parent doesn’t mean you have all the answers, just listen carefully, talk and asking clarifying questions will help them make sense of their experiences and integrate memories.

III. DO NOT S***K, NO MATTER WHAT

For sure for some parents, spanking can result to a short term compliance of needed relief for them.
However, this method does not teach the child right from wrong, it teaches the child to fear external consequences, and this will result for the child to avoid getting caught instead.

Spanking your child is just like modeling to them that he or she can resolve issues through violence. Children who are often spanked, smacked, or hit are more prone to fighting with other children. They tend to become more likely as bullies and prone to use verbal and physical aggression to solve disputes which will possibly result later in life in delinquency and antisocial behavior, horrible parent to child relationships, mental health issues, domestic violence victims or abusers.

There are variety of better alternatives to discipline that have been proven to be more effective such as positive discipline that we will discuss in the next number, number 4.

IV. PRACTICE KIND AND FIRM POSITIVE PARENTING

Babies are born with around 100 billion brain cells (neurons) with relatively little connections. But these connections will create our thoughts, drive our actions, shape our personalities and basically will determine who we are. These will be created, strengthened and sculpted through experiences across our lives.
Give your child a positive experience, so they will always have a chance to experience positive experiences themselves and offer them to others.
Give your child negative experiences. They won’t have the kind of development necessary for them to thrive.
Sing that crazy song. Have a tickle marathon. Go to the park. Laugh with your child. Ride through an emotional tantrum. Solve a problem together with a positive attitude. These positive experiences will not only create good connections in your childs brain, but they also form the memories of you that your child carries for life.

When it comes to discipline, honestly it’s difficult to remain positive. But it is possible to practice Positive discipline and avoid punitive measures.
Being a good parent means you need to teach your child the moral in what is right and what is wrong. Setting limits and being consistent are keys to good discipline. Be kind and firm when reinforcing rules. Focus on the reason behind the child’s behavior, and make it an opportunity to learn for the future, rather than to punish for the past.

V. LOVE THEM AND SHOW THEM THROUGH ACTION

It is not an issue to love your child too much. Loving them will not spoil them. Only what you choose to do or give in the name of love can – like material indulgence, leniency, low expectation, and over protection. When these things are given just to replace the real love, that is when you will have a spoiled child.
Loving your child can be as simple as giving them hugs, spending time with them and seriously listening to their issues every day. Showing these acts of love can trigger the release of feel good hormones such as oxytocin. These neurochemicals can bring us a deep sense of calm, emotional warmth and contentment, this will result for the child to develop resilience and of course a closer relationship with you.

VI. BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL

Walk the talk. Don’t just tell your child what you want them to do. Show them.
There is a part that human is a special species, because we learn by imitation. We are programmed to copy others actions to understand them and to incorporate them into our own. Children specifically watch everything their parents do very carefully.
So, be the person you want your child to be – respect your child, show them positive behavior and attitude, have empathy towards your child’s emotion – and your child will follow.

VII. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR OWN WELL-BEING

Often times, things such as your own health or even the health of your marriage are kept on the back burner when a child is born. If you don’t pay attention to them, they will become a bigger problem down the road. Take time to strengthen your relationship with your spouse. Most of the time we forget that we are also human beings that have a physical body, have an emotional and mental exhaustion too.

Don’t be afraid to ask for parenting help. Having some “ME TIME” for self- care is valuable to rejuvenate the physical body, and mind.

How parents take care of themselves physically, emotionally and mentally will have a great impact and contribute a huge difference in their parenting and family life. If these three areas will fail, your child and your entire family will suffer the consequences of it.

VIII. REFLECT ON YOUR OWN CHILDHOOD

Many parents wants their parenting differently from their parents, sometimes even those who had good upbringing and a happy childhood may want to change some aspects of how they were brought up. But mostly when we are not aware that when we open our mouth we talk like our parents did.

Reflecting on our own childhood is a step towards understanding why we parenting our children the way we do. Make not note of the things you would to change and think of how you would do it differently in a real different situations. Try to be mindful and always prepare to adjust changes of your own behavior when some issues would come up. Don’t give up if you don’t succeed at first. It takes a lot of practice to consciously change ones child upbringing methods.

IX. KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE AND REMEMBER YOUR PARENTING GOAL

What is your GOAL of raising a child?
If you are a parent who wants their child to do well in school, to be productive, to be responsible and to be independent, to be respectful, to be caring and passionate and to have a happy and fulfilling life and mostly to enjoy a meaningful relationship to you and others.

But how much time do you spend on working towards those goals. What if you are one of the parents who probably spend most of their time just trying to survive the day. Siegel and Bryson authors of the book, The Whole Brain Child, points out…. To not let the survival mode dominate your life, next time you feel frustrated and angry step back and breathe. Analyze what anger and frustration will do to you and to your child. Instead, try to work finding ways to turn every negative experience into learning opportunity for your child. Even tantrums can be turned into valuable brain sculpting moments.

Doing these will help you keep a healthy perspective, while you are also working on your primary goals in parenting – building a good relationship with your child.

To conclude, again I am not a parent myself, but I have a soft spot for those parents out there, future parents out there, and soft spot for kids. I watch my friends and families do their parenting, as to what I witness, some a of those parenting methods has its toxic side for both the child and the parent, so it challenge me to do research and read some psychological learning’s about parenting which my only goal is to share to each parents out there, future parents out there like me maybe in the future.

Would it be possible to find a healthy life in this world brimming of various diseases? And this unexpected pandemic known as the corona virus, numerous people was filled of fear in their heart and mind. Fear to be infected from the virus, maybe fear of early death.

For humans, motives also affect the way people work and move, whether for it is for money, a favor or by order. Even sitting down on a chair creates a great deal of fatigue if the job involves a great deal of responsibility or reluctance.

The human body feels fatigue from mental stressors as well as physical stressors and they react differently depending on their physical structure and mental attitude.

One can guess another physical condition by watching the way he/she stands up, sits down,
his/her working behavior, the way he/she sleeps and yawns, the speed of his/her speech and his/her breathing habits.

Because human beings have an erect posture their spine is affected by their movements. By looking at one's spine you can judge his/her state of health

The spine consists of 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar, 5 sacra and 3-5 coccyges.

Inside the spine there is a spinal cord, nerves, blood vessels, and sensory movement, lymph glands which are connected inside the inter vertebrae foramen and also connected to the autonomic nerves.
