Bakit?
Dahil how we say things matters.
Dahil what we choose to say also matters.

Hindi masamang magpayo. Pero mas maganda kung may lambing.
Hindi masamang magtama. Pero mas maganda kung may pag-unawa.
Hindi masamang mag-alala. Pero mas magaan kung hindi mapanghusga.

So next time, before we speak, let us ask ourselves:
✔️ Will this uplift or put them down?
✔️ Am I coming from love or pride?
✔️ If someone told me this, how would I feel?

Dahil sa huli, hindi lang intensyon ang mahalaga — kundi relasyon.

Here are some phrases we could use to convey our good intentions with our loved ones. So that they will feel our real love for them. That:
Helping doesn’t mean sounding superior.
Caring doesn’t mean being hurtful.
Correcting doesn’t mean shaming

Let’s speak with love. 💬❤️

Happy Mother’s Day to all the resilient, strong, and beautifully imperfect moms out there (both biological mothers and persons who are standing as a mom to someone).

You don’t have to be perfect—you just have to be good enough.
Enough to wipe the tears, to show up tired but still loving, to keep going when no one sees how hard it is.

Here’s to the quiet strength, the small sacrifices, the fierce love.
You are more than enough.
You are seen. You are loved. You are celebrated today and every day.

Mental Health Month: Let’s Talk about Postpartum Mental Health 🌸

Becoming a mother is a life-changing experience, but it can also bring unexpected emotional and mental challenges. This time, we are shining a light on postpartum conditions like depression, anxiety and mood disorders that might affect many new mothers.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your baby.

You matter.

Some thoughts after watching Inside Out 2. 🌷

We all have deeper need, a longing. Acceptance, significance - these matters to us. So we do what it takes. And most often, as we chase and hurry on things, we feel stuck. We feel overwhelmed with our emotions and try to push them aside. We become too hard on ourselves, and resent what we feel.

Yet, most often, what we need is to just sit down with our emotions, accept them as emotions without them defining who we really are. We can learn from these emotions and allow them to be part of us.

Grateful for being given the opportunity to present my work and research study in the plenary symposium of the Japanese Society of Psychiatrists and Neurologists as one of their Fellowship Awardees this 2024. I am looking forward to integrate the knowledge and perspective I gained into our ongoing local projects and do further global collaborative research.

Integral to giving care is the continuous acquisition of knowledge and its application to our clinical and community practice. 🌷

Reflection allows us to gauge the things that are important, guides our behavior towards them, and motivates us to act on the change we visualize for our lives.

Frustration creeps into our beings because sometimes we fail to align our behaviors with what we value. Our goals are harder to realize when we are not fully committed to change our old ways and beliefs. Goals become wishes then.

Today, why don’t we sit down and just reflect. Face that man in the mirror and confront what you have been avoiding that disallows you to create long lasting change.

Reflect and recalibrate. 🌷

No matter how a person loves us, she or he cannot always read our mind. “if s/he truly cares, s/he should know!” is a dangerous assumption. One cannot fully know our thoughts and emotions just by observing us. Let us unlearn that belief, and learn to communicate to others what we truly need. With that, the other person can respond accordingly, and eventually, we can negotiate. By communicating and asking, we are more likely to get what we need. 🌻

As a psychiatrist, my goal is not just to provide individual psychiatric treatment, but also to influence our society by conducting research that will have an impact on mental health policies and initiatives.

I am pleased to share with you our recently published community prevalence study on psychiatric conditions in a barangay in Balanga City, Bataan, done in 2019. This research aims to eventually influence and advise contextualized community mental health policies. Copy of the research is also given to our local government and health institution.
