CARING IS CONTAGIOUS - Empathy and compassion are the building blocks of kindness. Unfortunately, we’re currently in the midst of an empathy deficit, says Jamil Zaki, PhD, professor of psychology at Stanford University and author of The War for Kindness. In his online talk for the Family Action Network, ā€œBuilding Empathy in a Fractured World,ā€ Zaki notes that rituals that once brought us into regular contact — like grocery shopping or a bowling league — are giving way to more solitary pursuits and online activities. ā€œWhen we do interact,ā€ he adds, ā€œit’s often in ways that are transactional, thinned out, and anonymous.ā€

But ā€œcaring is contagious,ā€ he argues. If you model caring, compassionate, kind behavior in your community, others will do the same. Consider starting a community garden, holding a coat drive in the winter, or organizing a block party in the summer to get to know your neighbors. Check in on elderly folks who live alone.

Mataas kamo ang cholesterol mo?

Meron kaming tip sayo!

Your liver makes ALL the cholesterol you need (AHA)...

Therefore, cholesterol from the meat, poultry, and dairy products you eat is already an EXCESS to what you need.

Still the PINGGANG PINOY gives a more practical illustration on how we should do our healthy diet.

The updated US Dietary Guidelines underscore the central role of whole foods in chronic disease prevention, highlighting increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and the reduction of added sugars, refined grains, highly processed foods, and sugar-sweetened beverages—principles that closely align with evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine practices.

Consistent with this framework, the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine (PCLM) affirms that the prevention, treatment, and potential reversal of lifestyle-related chronic diseases are best supported by an optimal dietary pattern grounded in a diverse intake of whole and minimally processed plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, and seeds, while remaining within appropriate energy requirements. This pattern further emphasizes minimizing red and processed meats, foods high in saturated fat, and ultra-processed products containing added sugars or sweeteners, unhealthy fats and oils, refined carbohydrates, and excess sodium.

Despite strong and consistent evidence linking high consumption of red and processed meat and saturated fat to chronic disease, the final dietary guidelines send mixed and confusing signals. The renewed emphasis on red meat, full-fat dairy, and eggs—more than in previous versions—does not align with current scientific evidence and makes it harder for individuals to make truly health-promoting dietary choices.

The Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine looks to Canada’s Food Guide as a model for science-driven public nutrition policy. By removing dairy as a mandatory food group and prioritizing plant-based protein sources, it provides a clear, inclusive framework that supports both human and planetary health. It demonstrates what is possible when public health guidance is developed independently of industry influence.

PCLM remains committed to advocating for evidence-based dietary policies that place health and sustainability above political and commercial interests.

We must continue to push for policies—and plates—that reflect the best available scientific evidence.

Time to rethink what we eat.

"Butter intake was associated with a 15% higher risk of total mortality compared to the lowest intake. In contrast, the highest intake of total plant-based oils compared to the lowest intake was associated with a 16% lower total mortality."

After just 14 days of eating a healthier diet, women’s blood was able to slow down breast cancer cells growing in petri dishes—killing 20–30% more cancer cells than before the diet change. Researchers linked this effect to lower levels of IGF-1, a cancer-promoting growth hormone.

People eating plant-based diets for 14 years have half the amount of IGF-1 in their bodies, and more than twice the IGF-binding protein than those eating a more westernized diet.

What benefits do lifestyle changes have on breast cancer survival? Here are a few examples:

āž”ļø EAT FRUITS AND VEGGIES: Eating five or more servings a day and walking about 30 minutes a day, six days a week, were associated with a significant breast cancer survival advantage.

āž”ļø LOWER SATURATED FAT: Randomized studies show that when people with early-stage breast cancer lower their saturated fat intake, there is an increase in breast cancer survival.

āž”ļø HIGH-FIBER DIET: A higher fiber diet was associated with a 37% lower risk of dying from all causes put together and a 28% lower risk of dying specifically from breast cancer among breast cancer survivors––and it didn’t take much. There was about a 10% drop in death risk for every increment of 5 daily grams of dietary fiber. 🄦 That’s like 1 daily cup of oatmeal or broccoli, or just 1/3 cup of beans.

The diet that helps to prevent cancer also helps to prevent heart disease.
🚭 don’t smoke
šŸ‘Ÿ walk every day
🄦🫐 center your diet around whole plant foods

By living and eating more healthfully, we can increase our chances of living a long, healthy life.
