DOES GLASSES WEAKEN MY EYES!!?

No, glasses do not weaken your eyes; they simply provide a necessary correction to help you see clearly. The perception that your vision is worse without them is likely because you are now more aware of your natural vision problems, which can progress over time due to age, genetics, or lifestyle, not because the glasses themselves have harmed your eyes. Wearing glasses actually reduces eye strain and can help with visual development in children.

How glasses work:
They correct vision: Glasses work help focus light properly and correctly on your retina, which is how they correct for conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism

Prevent eye strain: By providing clear vision, glasses prevent the fatigue, headaches, and discomfort that can come from squinting or straining to see.

Support development: In children, glasses are crucial for proper vision development and can prevent conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) from becoming permanent

What Really Affects Your Eyes:
-Genetics – Your inherited traits play a major role

-Age – Natural changes occur as you get older

-Eye strain – From prolonged screen time or poor lighting

-Underlying eye conditions – Medical issues that need treatment
These are the genuine threats to your vision, not wearing corrective lenses.

Be Intentional!!
Get your eyes regular check.
Wear your glasses with pride.

Red Flags: When to Find a New Eye Doctor

Your vision is irreplaceable, so choosing the right eye care professional is crucial. Unfortunately, not every practitioner meets the standards you deserve. Here are the warning signs that should send you looking for a new eye doctor immediately.

Poor Hygiene Practices

If you witness your eye doctor cleaning their glasses with the same cloth they just used to wipe sweat, that's your cue to leave. Basic hygiene isn't optional in medical settings – it's fundamental to preventing infections and maintaining professional standards.

Inadequate Examination Methods

A thorough eye examination requires proper equipment and technique. Be wary of any practitioner who:
- Relies solely on a basic flashlight for examination
- Makes immediate diagnoses without comprehensive testing
- Skips essential diagnostic procedures

Lack of Patient History Assessment

Quality eye care begins with understanding your complete health picture. A competent eye doctor will always:
- Ask detailed questions about your medical history
- Inquire about current medications and health conditions
- Discuss your lifestyle and vision concerns
- Explain their findings clearly

The Bottom Line

Professional eye care involves thorough examinations, proper equipment, comprehensive health assessments, and clear communication. If you're receiving rushed service, inadequate explanations, or witnessing poor hygiene practices, don't hesitate to seek care elsewhere.

Your eyes deserve nothing less than professional, comprehensive care. When in doubt, trust your instincts and find a practitioner who prioritizes your vision health with the seriousness it deserves.

Your eyes work hard every day therefore they need daily exercise to stay strong and healthy. Simple eye exercises can reduce strain, improve focus, and even help prevent certain vision problems. Let’s dive into effective eye exercises you can try today:

1. 20-20-20 𝙍𝙪𝙡𝙚: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to reduce digital eye strain.

2. 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜: Roll your eyes in a circular motion, first clockwise, then counterclockwise, to improve flexibility and blood flow.

3. 𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜: Rub your hands together to generate warmth, then gently place them over your closed eyes for relaxation.

4. 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜: Hold a pen at arm’s length, focus on it, then slowly bring it closer to your nose. Repeat several times to strengthen focus.

5. 𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜: Blink consciously for a minute to refresh your eyes and prevent dryness.

6. 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙀𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩: Imagine a large figure eight about 10 feet away and trace it with your eyes, first in one direction, then the other.

7. 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙂𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜: Look at a far object, then shift focus to something near. Alternate for a few minutes to enhance focus and eye muscles.

➡️ Have you ever wondered why you experience eye strain when making use of your device?

As the world evolves, individuals of various professions spend more time on their mobile phones and laptops. As much as these are beneficial in so many ways, there are various negative effects it can have on the eyes as studies have shown that one of the major causes of eye strain is prolonged use of digital devices.

The main cause of digital eye strain is emission of blue light from the screen of our digital devices. Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that produces a high amount of energy compared to other light rays. It can be found on mobile devices, laptops, televisions e.t.c. Although, the largest source of blue light is from the sun, they tend to be a long lasting effect on the eyes when using digital devices because of the close proximity between the eyes and screen, and the amount of time spent on the screen.

Another cause of digital eye strain is glare from the screen of your device. This can make it harder for one to focus properly leading to strain around the eyes.

When you make use of a mobile device or a laptop, the ability to blink often reduces, which causes the tears in your eyes to evaporate quickly bringing about dry eyes and blur vision. Dry eyes makes one's eyes susceptible to infections.

Other symptoms of digital eye strain are headaches, neck pain e.t.c. These symptoms ranges from mild to severe. Sometimes, it goes on its own after you must have stopped working with your devices, other times, it persists even after you've stopped making use of your device.

There are various tips that can help relieve digital eye strain.
Some of the tips are:

🎯 Try to blink as often as possible. This helps to distribute tears evenly across the surface of your eyes and reduces the risk of dry eyes.

🎯 Adjust your screen lightening to the comfort of your eyes. Make sure the brightness of your screen corresponds to the lightening of the environment.

🎯 Adjust the position of your screen by keeping your device slightly below your eye level and about an arm's length away from your eyes.

🎯 Implement the 20-20-20 rule by taking frequent breaks.
For every 20 minutes you use a device, look at something at least 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds.

🎯 Use blue light blocking lens. As the name implies, this type of lens blocks excessive blue light from reaching your eyes.

🎯 Visit an optometrist. For some people, eye strain may be a symptom of an underlying eye condition. Taking a visit to your eye doctor for an eye examination can confirm or rule out this suspicions.

➡️ Does wearing glasses makes your eyesight worse?

There have been so many misconception about glasses acuity such as, wearing glasses for a long time worsen your sight or wearing glasses will cause one's refractive errors to progress. This is false and need to be corrected.

As we age, especially for younger patients, the eyes grow larger and thicker, causing a change in which the eyes refract light onto the retina. This can cause an adjustment in prescription. The lens of the eyes also hardens with age.
When this happens, the ability of the eyes to auto-focus begins to diminish; a process known as presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). Other reasons why your glasses prescription may change includes cataract, age related macular degeneration, astigmatism e.t.c.

All that wearing a corrective lenses do is to help improve your vision by focusing light in the right spot on the retina. This doesn't change the shape of your cornea neither does it make your eyes weaker.

So if you have been wearing the same prescription glasses you were given some years back after an eye examination, and notice that you are no longer seeing well with your glasses, it is because your vision may likely have changed and it is high time you go for another eye examination and get a new prescription glasses.
