World Prematurity Day is observed annually every 17th of November. Its aim is to raise global awareness on the challenges for women and babies associated with preterm birth, celebrates the lives of preterm infants and honors preterm infants who gained their angel wings. Preterm birth is a leading cause of death among children under five, with an estimated 15 million babies (one in ten) born prematurely worldwide every year.

A patient may be screened earlier if she has risk factors for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus such as overweight or obesity, family history of diabetes, had given birth previously to an infant weighing greater than 4 kilos (9 pounds), with history of polycystic ovaries or women above 35 years old.
