The Occupational Therapy section in collaboration with the Office of the Medical Center Chief, the Chief of Medical Professional Staff, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Specialty Centers, various Departments and Offices, 122 recipients (patients, parents, caregivers, interns and staff) celebrated the milestones of our pediatric patients with empowered parents and caregivers. ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿนโ›ฑ๏ธ๐ŸŒž ๐ŸŒŠ

The annual celebration is a testament of MMMH & MC being a child-friendly hospital, and through collaborative activities among its servicing units, the hospital is strengthening inclusivity of People with Disabilities (PWD) within the communities of the Ilocos Region.

Happy World Occupational Therapy Day! (Day 2)

The Occupational Therapy Section in collaboration with the Department of Dentistry and Medical Social Service held the 4th Annual Trick or Treat activity for pediatric inpatients of MMMH & MC.

Rooting from the 1st Trick or Treat activity in 2022 as a medium to lessen anxiety experienced by inpatient pediatrics and their caregivers during the 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the activity became an annual tradition to strengthen MMMH & MC as a pediatric-friendy hospital.

Celebrating the World Occupational Therapy Day 2025. (Day 1)

October 17, 2025 marks the piloting of an Aqua Groove activity (phase 1, activity 1) of a developing Wellness Program for a small group of patients with lymphedema at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. The goal of activity 1- Aqua Groove is to enable patients to "complete series of simple, rhythmic movements without observable fear of water while enjoying a meaningful socialization with co-patients".

Navigating through their fear to enable them to complete simple rhythmic movements, took several modifications. By the end of the session, the patients were able to complete rhythmic movements outside and inside pool while seated, standing and walking.

Occupational therapists believe that achieving great things begin with simple beginnings. This is one beginning we hope to measure the efficacy in achieving better health outcomes and fully develop the Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for patients of the hospital in the next year to come.

We are thankful to our Medical Center Chief Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza for allowing us to pilot meaningful activities. Likewise, we are thankful to Treasure Trove Resort, Bert Lozada Swim School, and Zafire Distributors Inc., in partnering with us to make this activity possible.

In collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, the MMMH & MC - OT section piloted the capability seminar to teachers, child development workers (CDW), barangay health workers (BHW), and parents servicing children with disability in Bangui and nearby areas.

Aligning with the mission-vision of the MMMH & MC, the capability seminar is a precursor in the institutionalization of the OT "Parents Skills Training for Children with Developmental Delays" (PSTCDD) to empower community service providers in their role in collaborative therapy.

Within the 4-year running operation of the OT section of the MMMH & MC, the elderly population would voice their concerns on โ€œdifficulty making sense of information received through their sensesโ€. Most noted are: (1) โ€œI hear it, but I have difficulty understandingโ€; (2) โ€œI see it, but I have difficulty identifying or make sense of what I am seeingโ€; (3) โ€œI have difficulty rememberingโ€, and (4) โ€œWhy am I so slowโ€. OT clusters these concerns under impairment of the โ€œsensory processing speedโ€. Sensory processing speed is a foundation of cognitive processes, significant to the quality of performance of daily activities.

Given the projected increase of the older population by 2030 (World Health Organization, 2024), and the prevalence of dementia and Alzheimerโ€™s disease, the OT section continuously improves its "Cognitive Training Program" (CTP) of which the objective is to improve the โ€œsensory processing speedโ€ among the elderly population.

The OT section is grateful for the opportunity to join the Community Senior Day Care program of the Department of Family and Community Medicine in Pinili, Ilocos Norte last April 4, 2025. Joining the outreach program for seniors of the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2024 and 2025, enabled sharing of 3 simple interventions under CTP, that seniors can do daily at home.

It is an opportunity to share the 4-year journey of the Occupational Therapy section, in pilot testing strategies that strengthened its tele-practice, utilizing the online platform and system of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center.

May the output of this focus group discussion (FGD) by the UNDP-NEDA-DOH-DLSU-SDRC, greatly supports responsiveness towards full implementation of telemedicine in the delivery of health services in the Philippines.

We are thankful to our Medical Center Chief, Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, in mobilizing the Integrated Hospital Operations Management Unit towards digitalization of the hospital operation, of which greatly supported the OT tele-practice.

The Occupational Therapy section of the MMMH&MC, in collaboration with the Office of the Municipal Mayor of Pinili, conducted its 2nd Learning Development Intervention (LDI) for 110 Barangay Health Workers (BHW) of Pinili, Ilocos Norte, last March 14, 2025.

In support of the Local Government Unit's (LGU) advocacy program, โ€œPag-angat ng mga lider para sa pagsulong ng lipunang walang naiiwanโ€, the objective of the LDI is to enable BHW to effectively use the Autism Observation Checklist, as a tool to identify "red flags" of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) among children in 25 barangays of Pinili. This competency will empower them in their role of profiling Persons with Disabilities (PWD).

We would like to thank Honorable Mayor Rommel T. Labasan of the municipality of Pinili, members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Pinili, MSWD, and STAC-Pinili for their continuous advocacy on autism awareness, and our Medical Center Chief, Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza for her leadership in mobilizing health workers towards accessible service and training at the community level.
