PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY: BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE DRINKING!

Following the recent typhoon, our water supply may be contaminated. To keep you and your family safe from water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid fever, please ensure that all drinking water is properly boiled.

What You Should Do:

1. Boil water for at least 1 minute (or 3 minutes if you are in a high-altitude area).

2. Let it cool naturally and store it in a clean, covered container.

3. Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, and making infant formula.

4. Do not drink water directly from the tap or from any unclear source.

5. Continue practicing proper handwashing and hygiene to prevent illness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “boiling water is one of the most effective ways to make it safe for drinking.”

Let’s work together to keep our community safe, healthy, and disease-free.

Stay safe and hydrated!

ADVISORY | In view of the frequent tremors felt across Leyte and nearby provinces, VSU is taking precautionary steps to keep our students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders safe.

Through OP Memorandum Circular No. 272, s. 2025, the University has issued interim guidelines to minimize risks while maintaining academic continuity during the ongoing midterm examinations.

1. All midterm exams shall shift to asynchronous mode from October 13 (Monday, 1:00 PM) to October 18 (Saturday). Faculty are to coordinate directly with students for exam arrangements. Face-to-face exams, if unavoidable, must only be done in safe spaces. No exams in the gymnatorium.

2. Face-to-face exams or NSTP activities on October 18 may proceed only in safe and open areas, avoiding enclosed or unsafe spaces.

3. Faculty deans and department heads shall designate safe, structurally sound, and preferably ground-level laboratories or classrooms for laboratory and practical exams. No use of the gymnatorium.

4. Everyone is advised to prepare a personal “Go Bag” (water, food, medicine, flashlight, whistle, ID, etc.) and to review earthquake safety protocols with their units in coordination with the VSU-CMC.

5. The Guidance and Counseling Office shall be available to provide psychological first aid and counseling for anyone experiencing anxiety or distress due to the tremors.

Everyone is reminded to stay calm and alert, and to always look after one another. Your safety and well-being remain at the heart of every decision we make for our the entire VSU academic community.

Public Health Advisory: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral infection that commonly affects young children, but anyone can get it. The virus spreads easily through direct contact with bodily fluids (such as droplets from coughing or sneezing) and contaminated objects (like utensils, toys, and surfaces).

Common Signs and Symptoms:
• Fever
• Painful sores in the mouth, tongue, gums, or inner cheeks
• Sore throat
• Loss of appetite
• Non-itchy rash or small red spots on the palms, soles of the feet, and buttocks

While most cases are mild and self-limiting, HFMD can occasionally lead to serious complications if not properly managed.
How to Prevent HFMD:
1. Practice proper hand hygiene.
Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers-especially after touching shared surfaces or objects.
2. Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
Wear a face mask in crowded or enclosed areas and dispose of used tissues and masks properly.
3. Maintain physical distancing.
Avoid close contact with individuals showing signs of illness.
4. Do not share personal items.
Refrain from sharing utensils, towels, toys, or phones.
5. Ensure good ventilation.
Keep windows open and avoid staying in poorly ventilated spaces.
6. Stay home if you feel unwell.
Seek medical attention if you develop fever, rashes, or mouth sores.
Remember: Good hygiene, responsible health practices, and early medical consultation help stop the spread of HFMD and protect our community.
