STRENGTHENING THE ABACA INDUSTRY OF DAVAO ORIENTAL
PBSP, through the SHIELD Program, successfully conducted the Abaca Value Chain Analysis (VCA) Review Workshop with the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental and Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), last November 17, 2025.
The PLGU expressed strong appreciation for the VCA, highlighting how the validated findings will support the localization of provincial strategies. The findings will also feed directly into the updating of the Provincial Commodity Investment Plan (PCIP). This ensures that future programs and investments for the abaca sector are grounded on real value chain needs.
In line with this activity, PBSP and government partners also conducted field visits and consultations with abaca farmer associations, cooperatives, and abaca weavers to finalize their Business Continuity Plans (BCPs). The activities highlighted the resilience challenges and value-adding opportunities across the abaca industry.
A key highlight of this process is the strong participation of indigenous communities and women, whose vital roles in abaca farming and traditional weaving keep the industry resilient.
Together with the Davao Oriental local stakeholders, SHIELD continues to strengthen economic resilience through evidence-based planning and institutional collaboration.
