Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that can lead to a range of symptoms from mild to severe, including fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Treatment for mild cases involves rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers, while severe cases may require antiviral drugs and medical attention. The most effective way to prevent the flu is to get an annual flu vaccine.
Symptoms
Fever or feeling feverish/chills
Cough
Sore throat
Muscle or body aches
Headache
Fatigue (tiredness)
Runny or stuffy nose
Some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea, which is more common in children
Treatment
Home care: Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and aches. Avoid aspirin for children and teens recovering from flu-like symptoms due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Medical treatment: Antiviral drugs may be prescribed for those with severe symptoms or who are at high risk of complications like pneumonia.
See a doctor if: You are concerned about your symptoms, have a high fever, or have a cough that isn't improving.
