The two-day Barangay Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (BESU) Officer Training held on December 1–2, 2025, at the Buenavista Cultural Center marked an important step in strengthening the municipality’s capacity to detect, monitor, and respond to notifiable diseases within the community. This activity aimed to capacitate newly designated BESU Officers by equipping them with essential knowledge and skills in epidemiology, disease surveillance, case detection, and timely reporting—critical components in safeguarding public health at the grassroots level.
The training formally opened with a warm welcome message from our Department of Health (DOH) representative, Sir Simplicio E. Torreon, DMO IV, RN, who emphasized the vital role of barangay-level surveillance in preventing outbreaks and promoting community resilience. His message highlighted the shared responsibility of barangay health workers, surveillance officers, and local health leaders in ensuring that public health threats are addressed promptly and effectively.
The sessions were delivered by two distinguished trainers from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU)—Jomar Vidas, DSO, RN, and Jeffrey Genabe, DSO, RN. Their lectures and interactive discussions covered fundamental concepts of epidemiology, the surveillance cycle, notifiable diseases, data collection and analysis, and the importance of accurate and timely reporting through established systems. Practical exercises and case scenarios allowed participants to apply these concepts, enabling them to better understand their crucial roles in disease detection and community-based surveillance.
The activity was smoothly facilitated by Public Health Nurse Aileen Mahusay, whose leadership ensured the orderly flow of the program, effective coordination, and active participation from all attendees. Her efforts contributed greatly to the overall success of the training.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Marivic L. Chua, who commended the participants for their dedication and encouraged them to apply their learnings in their respective barangays. She reiterated the importance of continuous collaboration among local health frontliners in maintaining strong surveillance systems that protect the health and wellbeing of the community.
In relation to this, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Municipal Mayor Hon. Dave Duallo for the unwavering support that made this event possible. The success of the training reflects the local government’s commitment to strengthening public health programs and empowering frontline workers in the municipality.
Overall, the BESU Officer Training served as a meaningful and timely initiative that enhanced local capacities and reinforced the municipality’s preparedness in responding to public health concerns. The knowledge and skills gained by the participants will undoubtedly contribute to a more vigilant, responsive, and resilient health system for the people of Buenavista.
