Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, the City Government of Butuan continues to prioritize the safety and welfare of Butuanon migrant workers. Through strengthened coordination with national agencies, the city ensures timely support for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and remains committed to assisting those who may need to return home.
In line with this, the Mayor Law Fortun called for a meeting with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) RD Atty. Jason P. Balais, Field Office Head Keith C. Duran, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) RD Ritchel M. Butao, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) OIC Rodel Deligero, and Butuan City Councilors Ferdinand E. Nalcot and Atty. Dendo G. Udarbe, to discuss updates on Butuanon workers in the region and reinforce support mechanisms. Agencies reported that around 19,568 overseas workers are currently being monitored, highlighting the importance of close coordination to ensure timely assistance.
Five Butuanon workers have expressed their intention to return home should the situation worsen. Government partners discussed interventions such as employment facilitation, livelihood assistance, and welfare support services to help returning OFWs transition and rebuild their livelihoods, as the City Government continues to work closely with partner agencies to safeguard the welfare of Butuanon migrant workers.
