♥️ Co-regulation - when we use our regulated nervous system to support another nervous system ♥️

Keeping in mind that some children respond well to hugs when they’re in a heightened state, while others don’t. And the same child might want a hug sometimes, and not at other times. Each child’s idea of comfort/calm will look different.

When physical touch is not wanted, you can try letting them know you’re close by and there when they need you.

But…sometimes after you’ve reassured them you’ll stay nearby, they might tell you to leave. Some people might say that you should stay with the child even if they’re saying that they don’t want you to, otherwise you’re sending them the message that their feelings are too much for you. However, there’s no scientific evidence for this, and it understandably might not feel right, as it can feel like disrespecting a child’s requests or denying them of their individual needs in the moment. My opinion is to follow what feels best for you.
