FACTS (Need to Know)๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ

๐Ÿค”Collecting a processing fee for pasteurized breastmilk, even when the milk is donated?????

It is a common practice among human milk banks. This fee isn't for the milk itself, but rather covers the costs associated with ensuring the milk's safety and quality.

In the Philippines, government hospitals (In-Patients) provide pasteurized donor milk FREE OF CHARGE to patients in need, particularly for vulnerable infants like premature babies.

Philippine Government Support in the Hospital provide donor MILK FREE for indigent patients.

โšซ๏ธKey Costs Covered by Processing Fees

โ€ข Donor Screening: Rigorous health checks and blood tests for infectious diseases. Including HIV and Hepatitis B Screening.

โ€ข Pasteurization: Heat treatment (like Holder pasteurization at 62.5ยฐC for 30 minutes) to kill bacteria and viruses.
โ€ข Microbiological Testing: Ensuring safety before and after pasteurization.
โ€ข Storage and Handling: Freezing and distribution logistics.
โ€ข Operational Costs: Staff, equipment, facilities.

โšซ๏ธPurpose and Benefits

Human milk banks provide critical nutrition for babies who can't receive their mother's milk, often due to prematurity or illness. Donor milk reduces risks like necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis in vulnerable infants

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines โ€” In a powerful display of community and support, 130 lactating mothers from Cagayan de Oro gathered at the Deluxe Hotel on August 26, 2025, for the 5th Hakab sa Oro event, a key highlight of Breastfeeding Awareness Month.

The event, a collaborative effort between the City Health Office and the DOH X Department of Health Center for Health Development - Northern Mindanao (DOH CHD-NM), featured a simultaneous latch-on, symbolizing the collective commitment to nurturing the cityโ€™s youngest residents.

"Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems" served as the theme emphasizes the importance of collective support networks for breastfeeding mothers and babies, encompassing nourishment, rest, emotional care, and supportive environments in homes, workplaces, and communities to ensure the best start for children and promote lifelong health.

The guest speaker, Dr. Shiela Mae S. Taal, breastfeeding and nutrition chairperson of J.R Borja General Hospital, highlighted breastfeeding as a crucial foundation for a child's health and a mother's well-being.

The event also included special contributions from key partners. The Xavier Science Foundation, Inc. distributed hygiene kits to the participating mothers, while the Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro gave five kilos of rice to 30 lucky winners.

As a highlight of the event, the CDO IYCF-Breastfeeding Task Force recognized the city's top five Best Breastfeeding Rooms. The awardees included SM City CDO Uptown, SM CDO Downtown, Ororama Cogon and Carmen and S&R Cagayan de Oro, celebrating their commitment to providing supportive spaces for mothers.

The success of the 5th "Hakab sa Oro" was a testament to the collaborative spirit of the CDO IYCF-Breastfeeding Task Force and its partners. Representatives from the NMMC Human Milk Bank and Lactation Unit, JRB Hospital Cagayan de Oro City Human Milk Bank- Lactation Support Center, CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY POLICE OFFICE, Social Welfare and Community Development of CSWD - Cagayan de Oro City, City Agriculture Office - Cagayan de Oro and other key organizations were present to provide their full support.
