Breastfeeding mothers in the Philippines are being called upon to donate their breastmilk to support infants affected by the recent earthquake disaster in Northern Cebu. The Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) has launched an appeal for human milk donors, emphasizing the importance of breastmilk as the safest and most reliable source of nourishment for infants in emergency situations.

How to Donate:

- Contact the NMMC Human Milk Bank & Lactation Unit.
- Donations are accepted daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00PM. Monday-Friday
6:00A.M- 1:00PM Saturday-Sunday

Process of donation:

1. Please answer a quick screening form below:

2. We will then send you confirmation of your eligibility to donate.

3. Ways to donate:
- actual expression at the milkbank
- personal delivery of expressed milk
- meet up or pick up
(Monday-Friday 9am-4pm or
Saturday and Sunday 7am-1pm).
You just need to schedule the pick-up 1 or 2 days ahead so we can arrange it with the Hospital Vehicle.

🤔Collecting a processing fee for pasteurized breastmilk, even when the milk is donated?????

It is a common practice among human milk banks. This fee isn't for the milk itself, but rather covers the costs associated with ensuring the milk's safety and quality.

In the Philippines, government hospitals (In-Patients) provide pasteurized donor milk FREE OF CHARGE to patients in need, particularly for vulnerable infants like premature babies.

Philippine Government Support in the Hospital provide donor MILK FREE for indigent patients.

⚫️Key Costs Covered by Processing Fees

• Donor Screening: Rigorous health checks and blood tests for infectious diseases. Including HIV and Hepatitis B Screening.

• Pasteurization: Heat treatment (like Holder pasteurization at 62.5°C for 30 minutes) to kill bacteria and viruses.
• Microbiological Testing: Ensuring safety before and after pasteurization.
• Storage and Handling: Freezing and distribution logistics.
• Operational Costs: Staff, equipment, facilities.

⚫️Purpose and Benefits

Human milk banks provide critical nutrition for babies who can't receive their mother's milk, often due to prematurity or illness. Donor milk reduces risks like necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis in vulnerable infants
