As our graduates reflect on their journey, they remind us that persistence matters more than endurance, and grace matters more than strength (Naldoza, Internal Medicine, 2025). They leave their training with hearts grateful and cups full and overflowing (Cabanlit, Surgery, 2025), acknowledging the mentors who demanded more from them (Guba, Surgery, 2025) and the families and colleagues who stood in the gap, often acting as Mom and Dad when they could not always be present (Tan, Pediatrics, 2025). These words speak of sacrifice, formation, and a calling lived with humility and purpose.

Today, we celebrate not only competent physicians, but formed healersโ€”grounded in grace, excellence, and service. As we send them forth, we are reminded that God blesses us to be a blessing to others (M. Sison, Medical Director, 2025).

In 1958, the late Archbishop James Thomas Gibbons Hayes, SJ,DD, had a dream โ€“ a health project in Cagayan de Oro, his Diocese for the poor. He invited the SPC Sisters to help actualize his dream of building a hospital in Mindanao to attend to the physical well-being of the people. The first four Sisters arrived in Cagayan de Oro in 1957.

This legacy of the late archbishop of compassionate service for the sick, poor, and the needy has transcended over the years. From a small clinic then Maria Reyna Hospital has expanded to what is now Maria Reyna-Xavier University Hospital (MRXUH). The institutionโ€™s humble beginnings is still eminent as it puts patients welfare at the heart of the development of its facilities and services.
