✨️Debunking 6 Skincare Myths in 2026✨️
Let's separate facts from fiction.

🛑 Myth 1. Acne breakouts end in your 20s

✨️ Factors to consider when acne persists beyond puberty: Hormonal changes, stress, poor diet and lifestyle changes can all lead to adult acne

🛑 Myth 2. Glass skin is healthy skin

✨️ Camera filters, makeup and lighting can give you the illusion of glass skin. Normal skin is supposed to have texture!

🛑 Myth 3: Using antibacterial soap daily to prevent infections
✨️ Regular use of antibacterial soap could lead to more antibiotic resistant bacteria by killing the beneficial skin bacteria living on our skin
✨️ Thorough hand washing with regular soap and water is enough to prevent viruses and bacteria from spreading.

🛑 Myth 4: The more products you use, the faster the results.
✨️ Increased dryness, redness, stinging, itch and sudden breakouts are signs of irritation.
✨️Start low and slow. Gradually introduce 1 active product at a time.
✨️ Expecting everything to work in 7 days is why people stop and say "This doesn't work."
✨️ Especially for conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation and fine lines- our aim should be slow but consistent progress in about 3 months time (or more).

🛑 Myth 5: You do not need to use sunscreen if your makeup/foundation/face powder already has SPF.

✨️ The problem here lies in the false sense of security.
✨️ Your make up alone does not give you the rated sun protection your skin needs. In order to achieve this, you need to apply a THICK layer of makeup which we normally do not do.
✨️ Wear a separate broad spectrum sunscreen as your base (sufficient amount covering all areas of the face including eyelids, ears, hairline)

🛑 Myth 6: Viral skincare trends on social media are the best products

✨️Did you know social media influencers are paid thousands to promote a product? I am here to deinfluence you.
✨️ Oftentimes, the boring skincare product without the fancy packaging or advertising is the one that actually works.

✨️ Why January is the BEST time for a skin reset ✨️

1. Consistency impacts long term results.
We want you to build a sustainable, practical and doable skin routine.
Do you have an important event coming up? Birthday, graduation, wedding or a vacation. That includes looking at your timeline for the entire year.

2. We need careful planning when starting a new skincare routine or timing your procedures.
Medications and procedures take time to work. Sometimes the process is long. We discuss timelines (usually months to years) to reach your skin goal. Visible results definitely do not show up tomorrow.

3. If you want to transform your skin, we don't need massive routines. Simplify your skincare without losing progress. This is the time to reset your skincare routine without starting from scratch. Of course treatments should always be personalized.

4. Repair your skin barrier first before introducing new skin actives in your routine. It's best to gradually introduce 1 new product at a time or use something every other day to minimize irritation. Redness, sudden breakouts and dryness are signs of skin barrier damage.

5. We don't overpromise results. That's why an assessment and setting realistic expectations are important. Most in office procedures will take several sessions and not just 1 session to see visible results. Your skincare regimen should be tailored to your unique skin needs.

The truth is all of us will grow old. But not everyone gets the privilege of getting older. As I often tell my patients- We do not have to fear aging. Instead let's focus on how to age gracefully and beautifully.

When it comes to your skin, clinical experience and knowledge matters.
No aggressive "anti-aging" marketing gimmicks. Focusing on what truly matters which is aging well.

We don't want you to look like someone else but to evolve into a more confident and radiant version of yourself.

If you want skincare guidance that's honest and practical, follow for more. - Dr. Monica Sabal

Halfway through January already! If there are some things that we plan on keeping this year, it would be these.

✨️ Treatments that are guided by science and not marketing

Giving the right treatments at the right time starts with having a proper evaluation and diagnosis. One treatment cannot solve all your skin issues.

✨️ There are no quick fixes nor instant results.

If it promises to transform your skin immediately, that is a red flag. Consistency leads to good outcomes. An excellent daily skin care regimen is best for your overall long term skin health.

✨️ Every patient deserves a personalized and individualized approach

There is no one size fits all when it comes to treating a patient. While we follow evidence based treatment and guidelines, we always take into consideration other factors that can affect your treatment. What are your long term goals? What is your lifestyle?  What is your budget?

✨️ Timeless not just skincare trends

Every year, there will always be new skincare trends. A 10 step skincare routine is not necessarily better than a simple one. Trying to achieve glass skin can also lead to a damaged skin barrier. This is why a consultation with a board certified dermatologist is important to help and guide you.

New Year’s Resolutions are typically too big or overwhelming. We've all been there before.

But what if we approached 2026 differently?
Focus on just one thing each day and see what happens!

⭐️ Building microhabits - The key is consistency over intensity so that you can achieve your long term skin goals.

⭐️ Prioritizing our health everyday - If we want lasting change, we have to first identify YOUR goals. What is your main concern and priority? What do you want to achieve this year?

⭐️ Anchor It - Need to apply sunscreen daily but you only have an extra 5 minutes in the morning? Link the microhabit to something that you already do like brushing your teeth. A change doesn't need to be drastic.

⭐️ Be consistent - Sticking to and following through with your skincare routine. Remembering to wash your face 2x a day especially at night to remove dirt and make up. Make conscious efforts to apply your medications. Try to do it everyday one small step at a time.

Once microhabits become automatic, eventually it becomes a habit. By starting small like setting aside 10 minutes a day for self-care. A shift in mindset will help you achieve your skin goals.

I'm here to help you be the best version of yourself this 2026. - Dr. Monica Sabal

Day 1 of the 48th Philippine Dermatological Society Annual Convention and 12th Asian Scientific Meeting of Pediatric Dermatology

Today's key takeaways: Dermatology is not just about treating the disease but also serving our patients. To restore their confidence, dignity and hope.  To practice dermatology with integrity.  To serve not only patients with chronic skin conditions but also the most vulnerable population- our children. Our patients deserve nothing less than the best.
Grateful for this opportunity to be reminded why we began this journey in the first place.

Aesthetic dermatology is both an art and science. Mastering basic medical knowledge such as anatomy is important and crucial for procedural specialties. Even for seasoned injectors, expert led training workshops like these ensure our patients receive safe and effective treatments.

Congratulations to the UP-PGH Department of Dermatology, Department of Anatomy, F2ACES workshop organizers and faculty for continuously developing innovative ways of teaching functional facial anatomy.

Congratulations to the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Department of Dermatology for organizing ADARNA (Aesthetic and Restorative Dermatology Course). It was a day of high yield lectures and facial anatomy review.

Aesthetics is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach. It requires a deeper understanding of facial anatomy which is crucial for providing our patients with safe and effective treatments.
