# is a lifetime autoimmune disease where in the immune system fights back against the body's normal and healthy cells. It can affect different parts of the body, including the skin, bones, heart, lungs, kidneys, blood and brain.
Though there is no known cure at the moment, doctors, particularly rheumatologists, can manage the symptoms with the use of immunosuppresants like steroids. But since steroids can bring a whole plethora of side effects, doctors try to bring the dose to the lowest possible. Other medications are used to spare the patient from taking high dose of steroids, such as hydroxycloroquine.
Due to it's unpredictability, no two lupus journey are the same. But through seeing the doctor regularly, complying with medications, avoiding sun exposure, managing stress better, and living a healthy lifestyle, people with lupus may and can achieve low disease activity and remission.
We urge all who are living with lupus, their families, friends, and doctors to strive hard to make the government recognize the unmet needs in lupus healthcare, and push forward reforms for better lupus policy and care.
