Let's say you woke up with a terrible cough, a fever, and severe body aches. Immediately, you rush to the doctor and unfortunately, you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. For the last two weeks, you’ve been unaware that you were infected and you’ve ignored "the rules."

You figured, “I don’t feel sick. I have the right to keep living my normal life. No one can tell me what to do."

With your diagnosis, you spend the next few days at home on the couch, feeling pretty crappy; but then you’re well again because you’re young, healthy and strong. Lucky you.

But your best friend caught it from you during a visit to your house, and because she didn't know she was contagious, she visited her 82-year-old grandfather, who uses oxygen tanks daily to help him breathe because he has COPD and heart failure. Now, he’s dead.

The cashier at the restaurant where you picked up the pizza carried the infection home to his wife, who has MS(Multiple Sclerosis), which makes her immunosuppressed.

She’s admitted to the hospital because she’s having trouble breathing. She may need to be placed in a medically-induced coma and intubated. She may die surrounded by machines, with no family at her bedside.

All because you couldn't stand the inconvenience of following a few rules; of staying home; of changing your familiar routines for just a little while. Because you have the right, above all others rights, to continue living your normal life and no one, I mean no one, has the right to tell you what to do.

UPDATE: The Philippines had the fastest increase in coronavirus cases in the Western Pacific region, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), prompting the Department of Health’s (DOH) call not to “cherry pick” the countries for comparison.

The DOH clarified the increase in new coronavirus cases in the Philippines, saying the comparison made with Singapore and other countries requires a deeper understanding of population ratio versus number of cases.

The agency explained that Singapore has a population of 5.9 million, with a case load 43,246, the Philippines with 109 Million with 34,803 cases. Per One (1) Million people, Singapore has a higher case at 7,393 cases /1M population compared with the Philippines at 318cases /1M population.

While Singapore is able to manage its cases with a lower case fatality rate (CFR: 0.06%) or 26 deaths/ 1M population, Philippines registers a 3.6% CFR, or 1,236/1M population. This is still low compared to the Global CFR of 5.1%.

Singapore’s death per million is 4.4 deaths per million population while the Philippines has 11.34 deaths per million population. | via Pia Lee Brago
