CASE OF THE DAYπŸ’‘

A case of a two-year old canine patient presented at the clinic with signs of anorexia and malaise for a week. Physical examination revelaed mild abdominal distention and jaundice (yellow pigment of skin).

Blood samples taken and tested, and revealed thrombocytopenia and anemia.

See those blood creating a β€˜sandy’ of cluster like structure? Patient’s blood is positive on slide agglutination test, suggesting IMHA (Immune mediated hemolytic anemia), demonstrating obvious macroagglutination.

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia is one of the most common immune-mediated hematologic disorders in dogs and cats.

Patient is under medication for blood parasitism, which caused his condition. Get well soon πŸ’•

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is one of the most serious viral diseases that can affect cats. Among its types, wet FIP (also known as effusive FIP) is the most common. It’s typically characterised by the buildup of abnormal fluid in the cat’s abdominal or chest cavity.

Many cat owners often don’t realise the symptoms at first β€” such as a sudden swollen belly, loss of weight, persistent fever, stress, or a decrease in appetite and water intake.

Because these signs are similar to other illnesses, diagnosing FIP, especially the wet form, requires careful examination. One of the most common preliminary screening tools used by veterinarians is the Rivalta Test.

The Rivalta test in cats is a quick, inexpensive screening tool to help diagnose Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), particularly the "wet" (effusive) form, by testing the protein content of fluid from the abdomen or chest. A positive result, where a drop of fluid forms a "jellyfish-like" precipitate in a dilute acetic acid solution, suggests the presence of an exudate characteristic of FIP, but a definitive diagnosis requires further testing.
