Preparing children for an earthquake means teaching safety through calm guidance, practice, and reassurance. Here’s how to make sure they’re ready and confident when the ground starts to shake:

1. Explain What an Earthquake Is

Use child-friendly words: “An earthquake is when the ground shakes because of movement deep underground.”

Show simple videos or pictures to help them understand what happens.

Emphasize that being prepared helps everyone stay safe.

2. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”

Teach these three key actions:
DROP to the ground before you lose balance.
COVER your head and neck under sturdy furniture.
HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
Make it fun by turning it into a mini-drill or family game.

3. Identify Safe and Unsafe Spots

Walk around your home or school to find safe places (under strong tables, away from windows or heavy objects).

Point out danger zones (glass windows, tall furniture, big appliances, shelves, hanging frames).

Let kids help label “safe spots” so they remember.

4. Create and Practice an Evacuation Plan

Teach where and how to safely exit your home or school after the shaking stops.

Choose a safe meeting place outside (e.g., a safe familiar spot, neighbor’s yard, or open space).

Practice walking there calmly and quickly.

Assign roles — for example, older kids can help guide younger siblings.

5. Pack a Kids’ Emergency “Go Bag”

Let them help pack their own small emergency kit:
Snacks and bottled water
Flashlight or glow stick
Whistle (to call for help)
Small toy, comfort item, or stuffed animal
Extra clothes and face mask
Family photo and contact card with important details

6. Memorize Family and Personal Details

Help your child memorize key information in case you get separated:

Their full name and age
Parents’/Guardian's full names
Home address
Primary phone numbers (parents, grandparents, or a trusted adult)
Emergency hotlines (e.g., 911 or local disaster number)
Practice through songs or flashcards — repetition helps kids remember under stress.

7. Teach Communication Basics

Show older kids how to text or call for help safely.
Explain that texting is better than calling when networks are busy.
Teach them not to panic if phones don’t work right away — rescuers will help.

8. Stay Calm and Comforted

Children mirror adult reactions. Stay calm and reassuring during drills and actual quakes.
Say things like, “We know what to do,” or “We’re safe because we practiced.”
Let them talk about their feelings — comfort and encourage them afterward.

9. Practice Regularly

Conduct home or school earthquake drills every few months.
Reward or praise kids who remember the steps correctly.
Repetition builds confidence and helps them act automatically during emergencies.

10. Pray Together Before, During, and After

Teach children to pray for protection and peace before disasters happen.
During an earthquake, they can silently say,
“Lord, keep us safe.”

After the shaking stops, gather and pray together:
“Thank You, Lord, for protecting us. Please help others who need You.”

Remind them: 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿.

As parents, we must raise our children as warriors — strong, faithful, and ready to survive any calamity or disaster that may come.

Be a little extra patient when teaching your kids earthquake preparedness — every calm word and gentle reminder today can save their life tomorrow.

🗣️✨ 10 Things You Can Do to Avoid Speech Delay in Kids ✨👶

Speech and language development starts early! Here are simple ways parents can help their child communicate better:

1️⃣ Talk often – Narrate your daily activities to your child.
2️⃣ Read books daily – Even picture books build vocabulary.
3️⃣ Sing songs and rhymes – Music helps with rhythm and word recall.
4️⃣ Limit screen time – Real conversations are more effective than gadgets.
5️⃣ Encourage play – Pretend play and interactions boost language skills.
6️⃣ Listen patiently – Give your child time to respond, don’t rush.
7️⃣ Repeat and expand – If your child says “ball,” you can say “Yes, a big red ball!”
8️⃣ Use gestures – Combine words with actions to aid understanding.
9️⃣ Socialize – Let your child interact with other kids and adults.
🔟 Consult early – If you’re concerned, seek help from a Pediatrician.

👩‍⚕️ At Bello Kids Clinic, we guide parents in ensuring their child’s healthy speech and language development.
