The UEP Medical and Dental Health Services conducted Operation Timbang, including height & weight measurements, as well as Dental Examination for the elementary pupils last January 20 - 21, 2026.

The said activity aims to assess the nutritional status and dental health of the pupils to help promote their overall well-being and support necessary health interventions.

January is officially recognized as Schistosomiasis Awareness and Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Month. Known locally as bilarziya or "snail fever," this parasitic infection is caused by the blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum. While it may seem like a disease of the past, it remains a serious public health threat in agricultural and flood-prone region.

Schistosomiasis and malnutrition create a dangerous "vicious cycle." In the Philippines, where the disease is often found in farming and fishing communities, it is a leading cause of chronic malnutrition, especially among school-aged children.

The impact on nutrition can be broken down into four main mechanisms:

1. Nutrient Robbing and Blood Loss
2. Malabsorption of Nutrients
3. Chronic Inflammation and Appetite Suppression
4. Impact on Growth and Development (Stunting) because schistosomiasis often starts in early childhood, the nutritional drain happens during the most critical years of development.

Stunting: There is a direct correlation between schistosomiasis and stunting (low height-for-age). Even if the worms are cleared later, the height lost during these years is often permanent.

Cognitive Impairment: Because the brain requires massive amounts of energy and iron to develop, malnourished children with schistosomiasis often struggle with memory, attention, and school performance.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reports the top causes of death in the country for January to April 2025 (Provisional as of 30 September 2025). Leading the list were:
