Healing is all in the family...

Your problem with alcohol, drugs, gambling or s*x often becomes for a big problem for those close to you. Your shame and suffering becomes their shame and suffering. The feelings, responsibilities, and routines of your family members and others close to you have been disrupted. They may have become so involved in trying to control your illness, that they have become ill themselves... they need to heal too.

I. How do you recover from a gambling addiction?

Three main ways exist to treat gambling problems, including psychotherapy, medication and support groups. Cognitive behavioral therapy and behavior therapy help a person identify thought patterns that lead to and support a gambling problem, and replace them with healthier beliefs.

II. Is gambling addiction a mental illness?

A gambling addiction is a progressive addiction that can have many negative psychological, physical, and social repercussions. It is classed as an impulse-control disorder. It is included in the American Psychiatric Association (APA's) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fifth edition (DSM-5).

Gambling can be a fun, legal form of entertainment, but when the highs and lows of winning and losing become addictive, gaming and betting can take a serious toll on the lives of gamblers and their families.

Compulsive gamblers can lose and win thousands of pesos within a matter of days, or even hours, because they are unable to stop. The euphoric rush that accompanies a win can be so exhilarating that gamblers begin to crave that euphoria. When gamblers lose, the emotional crash of a loss requires a quick fix to regain that high. The inability to stop gambling, in spite of the negative consequences to one’s life, is known as gambling addiction, problem gambling, or compulsive gambling.
