So true - in TBRI training we also learn about the neuroscience of attachment and how too much "cry it out" can have devastating long term effects on attachment styles. Make sure your children know that you are available and they are safe! Meet the need, build attachment.

"It’s time to ask the tough questions.

Because when we give babies no choice but to cry it out, we need to ask what is the “it”?

The “it” is safety. The “it” is connection. The “it” is tenderness.

The “it” is us – their parents.

They are crying for us.

For us to come, for us to not leave, for us to pick them up, for us to soothe them, to hold them close.

As harsh a truth as that may seem, there’s no escaping it.

And what’s harsher is expecting babies to do what we can’t even do as adults – to ‘self soothe’."

We're honoured to partner with schools such as MSC and Ganaan Christian Academy in Lapu Lapu to train the teachers on Psychological First Aid, MHPSS and working therapeutically with children, and to teach the children Emotional Regulation Skills (TBRI). We hope and pray that these skills can be used to support those struggling after the recent earthquakes in northern Cebu.

On this World Trauma Day, as we think of all those affected by the earthquakes, let's look into how Play Therapy and Therapeutic Play can help children find healing, resolution, meaning, and a way through trauma, to the new normal.

Every Play Therapist has their own version of a toolkit crate – not just a box of toys, but a collection of symbols, sensory materials, and creative tools that invite communication beyond words.

Here’s a look inside what often travels with a therapist – and the deeper purpose behind each item:

🧸 Miniature figures: help children project real-life relationships and explore power, safety, and belonging through small-world play.
🎨 Art materials: drawing, clay, or watercolours provide a safe way to show feelings that might feel “too big” to name.
🪵 Natural objects stones, shells, feathers, and sand remind children of stability and connection to the real world – grounding tools in moments of stress.
🎭 Puppets and masks: give permission to express strong emotions through a character, allowing the child to stay both “in” and “outside” the story.
🧩 Building materials: blocks, magnetic tiles, or recycled cardboard let children create and rebuild worlds, testing out control, safety, and change.
📖 Story cards and blank books: help children reshape difficult memories into stories with new endings – a key part of therapeutic processing.

It’s not the items themselves that heal – it’s how they’re used, the intention behind them, and the emotional space they create.
A good toolkit crate is never just full – it’s alive, constantly evolving with the child’s needs.

✨ Imagine opening your own toolkit – what three objects would you include to help a child feel safe enough to play?

Play therapy is a unique way to support children’s emotional well-being through creativity and expression. From puppets and clay to sand trays and drawing, every instrument helps children communicate feelings, process experiences, and build confidence in a safe, supportive space.

Whether it’s storytelling with a puppet, sculpting emotions in clay, or exploring thoughts through drawing and sand, play therapy offers countless ways for children to express themselves and grow.

Every child's life matters!

📣📣𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡🔔🔔

At 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, we believe that when families are supported, children grow up safer, healthier, and more resilient—and that is su***de prevention in action.

The 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 shows us how strong families protect not just children, but also parents and communities:

🔑Parental Resilience – Parents who can manage stress are better able to model hope and coping skills.

🔑Social Connections – A strong support system reduces isolation, one of the key risks for depression and su***de.

🔑Knowledge of Parenting & Child Development – Understanding children’s needs helps create safe, nurturing spaces where mental health can thrive.

🔑Concrete Support in Times of Need – Access to food, shelter, healthcare, and counseling prevents crises from overwhelming families.

🔑Social & Emotional Competence of Children – When children learn to express emotions and problem-solve, they grow into adults better equipped to handle life’s challenges.

Su***de prevention starts with connection, care, and support. By strengthening families, we give children and parents the tools they need to face life’s hardest moments—and the hope to keep going.

Together, let’s protect children, support parents, and build communities where every life matters.
