DID YOU KNOW?

Anxiety disorders occur in twice as often in women than men, and social and cultural factors likely play an important role in the development of anxiety in females. Many factors contribute to higher rates of diagnosed anxiety in women, ranging from hormone fluctuations and brain chemistry to differences in how men and women cope. Women also experience residual anxiety from sexual abuse/violence more often than men.

There is a normal amount of anxiety a human feels each day. Normal levels of anxiety may present as low levels of fear or apprehension, mild sensations of muscle tightness and sweating, or doubts about your ability to complete a task. Importantly, symptoms of normal anxiety do not negatively interfere with daily functioning. Examples of these are riding a roller coaster, moving to a new school, or first time being in an aircraft. If it reaches to an extent where anxiety already is a hindrance to our daily lives, we need to seek professional help.

Research on depression, anxiety and exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can help improve mood and reduce anxiety. When we exercise regularly, our brain releases endorphins and other natural brain chemicals that can enhance our sense of well-being. Exercising also diverts our attention and takes our mind off our worries. Exercising will mostly likely give us confidence and getting in shape can also make us feel better about our appearance. Exercising doesn't only mean going to the gym and lifting heavy weights. Any physical activity that gets us off the couch and moving can help improve our mood. Examples of these are; gardening, washing the car, walking around the block or engaging in other less intense activities.

Anxiety and depression can still be genetic if they show up in older family members. Plenty of studies show that anxiety is heritable, meaning that trauma felt by a parent can create a biological imprint in offspring. Children are incredibly sensitive to the way their parents interact with other people. They may pick up social cues from their parents. Or they may be neglected or abused by their parents.
