"Your light does not come
from your successes.

Your light is not ignited
by perfection,
or achievement or body shape.

Your light is not fuelled by
popularity or acceptance.

Neither is your light at any
risk of being put out,
when other lights around you,
are bright.

Your light is simply made of the
you-ness that makes you you,
the worries you have in the night,
the music which sparks your joy,
the books you had to read twice,
the memories stored safely
in your heart,
the people you love and the
people who love you.

Your light is never dependant
on how you look,
or how you perform.

It’s just there,
and it’s quite simply brilliant,
and it’s all yours.

And it lights up every room
you walk into,
whether you activate it or not.
What a wonderful thing.

Shine bright little fighter,
this dark world needs your glow."

“As SLPs it is important to use the correct lingo when describing children who are struggling to find their voice.

There are three terms that can be used depending on the child’s age and amount of verbal output.

1. “Preverbal” is a term used to describe young children who aren’t talking YET.

2. “Minimally verbal” is a term used to describe children of any age who speak a few words or phrases.

3. “Nonverbal” is a term used to describe older children who, despite years of speech therapy, still do not talk.

So..:a 2-year-old who doesn’t say any words is considered preverbal. A 3-year-old who say 5 words is considered minimally verbal. A 10-year-old who says a few words randomly and sporadically is also considered minimally verbal. A 10- year-old who say no words is nonverbal.

The one term that I hear many parents and some professionals use is “mostly nonverbal” and THAT is not a thing. “Minimally verbal” is the correct term.

Whether preverbal, minimally verbal, or nonverbal....all children who are struggling with oral language development will benefit from AAC to support functional communication.”

🥬 Picky eating is a common concern among parents. Children’s taste buds change over time along with advances in their development. As a child grows, he learns to discern what tastes, looks and smells good for them 😉. So, it is common that a child who once ate carrots or broccoli or basically “anything” when he/she was 1, now doesn’t and becomes picky at 2 yrs of age.

While this is a challenge, it also can be seen as a good thing. It means your child is starting to think and make decisions for himself and using his senses to decide whether this food is something worth eating. 🍎 This picky eating phase shouldn’t last long. Avoid power struggles with your child. Here’s what a parent can do:

🍎 be supportive and patient
🍎 be encouraging and never force feed
🍎 have regular meal times and a set place for meals
🍎 eat together as a family to model appropriate eating behavior
🍎 offer a variety of foods
🍎 avoid distractions like TV or iPads
🍎 if the child doesn’t want to eat much, do not substitute with milk or other fortified milk or food supplement (refer to my previous post about too much milk intake)
🍎 praise your child for atleast trying a small bite or touching or smelling the food he doesn’t like. It can take as much as 20 times of exposure for a child to try a food item. So don’t give up 😊
🍎 limit meal time to 20-30 minutes or only 15 minutes if he doesn’t start eating, the child is probably not hungry. Offer food again in an hour or two.
🍎 allow your child to feed himself and tolerate age appropriate mess

Remember, a parents’ job is to prepare the food, a child’s job is to decide how much he wants to eat.🍓

Nonetheless, there are kids who do have more serious feeding problems that goes beyond picky eating. If you notice your child has the following red flags 🚩, you need to step back and think about what other things may be happening and see a specialist if needed and a thorough exam and history will be done to determine further steps.

🚩 failure to gain weight over a period of time
🚩 developmental or behavioral concerns
🚩 vomiting, choking, gagging with food
🚩 diarrhea or constipation
🚩 difficulty breathing related to cardiac problems
🚩 fear of feeding or eating
🚩 food aversions or restricted food choices

☝️ May I just post this here so we can clarify the word “sped” or “special education”.

WHAT IS “Special education” or in our country, commonly called “sped” for short.

SPED is a misunderstood word and used by most to describe people with disabilities. Colloquially used as “sped sya” to comment on a person with disability and sometimes said to make fun of these individuals. 😔 Parents also ask me sometimes, “sped po ba ang anak ko”? My answer is, “hindi po sya sped”.

✏️ WHAT IS SPED???? Special Education is not a place. It is not an adjective that is used to describe people who needs additional educational support. SPED means— additional help in school in an environment that can accomodate the child with the help of a teacher who has additional training and focus on helping these individuals learn because they have a different learning style or take a while to grasp learning concepts. It is meant to have a positive definition. Not a negative connotation. Kids receiving special education should have an IEP, individualized education plan. This document states the child’s goals and is a helpful tool to measure their progress while receiving special education supports.

I hope this clarifies what sped means so we can use it in a sentence appropriately. Happy weekend! 🤩
