Our Story

Achalasia characteristically manifesting as difficulty in swallowing used to be a relatively rare disease especially in the Philippines. However, advances in technology coupled with awareness of the disease show that the condition is not that really rare.

Treatment for achalasia traditionally consists of intake of oral smooth muscle relaxants, balloon dilatation and surgical Heller’s myotomy.

With the advent of cutting-edge endoscopic technology, Prof. Haruhiro Inoue, a Japanese master endoscopist, developed an innovative, minimally invasive and lasting treatment modality for achalasia called “Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)”. Since its inception some ten (10) years ago at Showa University Hospital in Yokohama, Japan, POEM has resulted in dramatic relief from difficulty of swallowing to several thousands of patients world-wide afflicted by the disease.
