𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱

Many parents worry deeply when they start to notice developmental red flags in their children. Some compare their child to others, while some stay quiet, hoping the signs will go away with time. These feelings are valid. The fear of what might come next, the uncertainty about where to go, and the worry about being judged are all heavy burdens that parents quietly carry.

As an occupational therapist, I have seen how these worries can turn into strength once parents take the first step toward early intervention. Science tells us that the brain develops fastest between ages 1 to 5, creating the foundation for movement, communication, learning, and emotion. This is a golden period for growth, and the earlier we act, the greater the chance for lasting progress.

I understand the hesitation. I have referred not only my clients but even family members who showed evident developmental delays to early intervention. It was never an easy conversation, but I have seen the transformation that follows when help begins early.

Parents, your worries are real — but they can also lead to hope. Early detection and early intervention do not define what your child cannot do; they reveal what your child can become when given the right support at the right time.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆?

Start early. It can change everything for your child. I tell parents to start as soon as they feel worried. Do not wait for a perfect explanation. Early help gives children more time to learn new skills.

The brain grows fastest in the first years of life. This makes early years a powerful time for change. When we act early, we can shape learning, movement, and self control more easily.

You can begin with a simple check up. Talk with your pediatrician. Ask for a developmental screening or an evaluation by a licensed therapist. You do not need to wait until a concern becomes big.

A good therapist will begin with an assessment. They will explain clear goals. They will show you practical steps to use at home. Therapy should fit your child and your family life.

Early therapy is not always long term. Some children need short focused support. Others need ongoing help as they grow. The plan should change with the child.

Trust your instincts as a parent. Keep notes about what you see at home. Ask questions about goals, methods, and how progress is measured. Ask who will guide you and how you will be involved.

Starting therapy early is not about labels. It is about giving your child the best chance to learn and belong. When we start early, we earn back time that helps a child move forward.

In light of the strong earthquake and upon the advice of our local government units, all therapy and academic program sessions are suspended today, October 10, to ensure the safety of our children, families, and staff.

Please stay alert and prioritize safety at all times.

Let’s continue to keep one another in our thoughts and prayers. 🙏
