Lumad advocates supports the position of VP Leni Robredo to abolish NTF-ELCAC

We are one with VP Leni Robredo in calling for the abolition of the murderous and notorious NTF-ELCAC. We also welcome and commend the senate for cutting the budget of the said agency.

Since the establishment of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), Lumad students, teachers and communities have been at the center of relentless attacks.

In connivance with NCIP, AFP and other government agencies, NTF-ELCAC continue to threaten and harass Lumad evacuees and advocates even in their sanctuaries. Among their noted operations were the February 15 raid of Lumad bakwit school in Cebu, the second Lianga massacre and the closure of 216 lumad schools on Mindanao.

We are calling other candidates to make the same stand. Further we call for senate and congress to finally and redirect its budget to aid poor Filipinos in this pandemic.

ANOTHER MASSACRE IN LIANGA CLAIMS 12-YEAR OLD LUMAD STUDENT, 2 OTHERS

A 12-year old student of the Lumad school TRIFPS and two Manobo Lumad were strafed and killed Tuesday by the military in Brgy. Diatagon, Lianga, Surigao del Sur.

Their deaths harken back the 2015 Lianga massacre that killed the Alcadev school director and two Lumad leaders, and shows the impunity on the Lumad has not ceased.

The massacre took place June 15, 2021 at around 1 pm, when troops belonging to the 3rd Special Battalion Force of the Philippine Army indiscriminately fired upon a group of indigenous people farmers killing W***y Rodriguez, Lenie Rivas and 12 year-old Angel Rivas in Sitio Panukmoan, Brgy. Diatagon, Lianga, Surigao del Sur.

“According to initial reports from the community, they were six of them who went to the farm to gather abaca when the soldiers opened fire. Three of them manage to escape” said Rius Valle, spokesperson of Save Our Schools Network.

According to residents, soldiers riddled the bodies with bullets claiming that the three fought back. However, residents belied the soldiers' claim and said the victims even asked permission from the military earlier before going to the farm.

State forces employing ‘nanlaban’ narrative is a worn-out excuse used to escape accountability, Valle said.

Angel Rivas was a Grade 6 student of Tribal Filipino Program of Surigao del Sur (TRIFPSS). Before the closure of TRIFPSS in KM 9, Brgy. Diatagon, Lianga last year due to the pandemic, Angel was awarded best in academics and agriculture. She is shy, quiet but active in agriculture. She dreamt to become a teacher someday.

“This only shows how monstrous and desperate this government is in silencing the Lumad resistance. In this administration, children were not spared in this brutal attacks” Valle lamented. He recalled Talaingod Manobo students Alibando Tingkas and Obello Bay-ao were killed by paramilitary troops few years ago.

Militarization continues in Lumad communities despite the pandemic, as reports of another incident of indiscriminate firing was reported in Agusan del Sur last June 14 with an undetermined number of people being wounded.

While the SOS and the Lumad community are now acting to ensure the safety of the survivors of this massacre, the SOS demands a stop to red tagging and militarization in the countryside and hold the 3rd Special Battalion Force accountable for violating human rights in the killing of civilians. #
