When screens feel like the safest place
For many autistic young people, the digital world offers something the real world rarely does: predictability. Screens reduce the sensory and social demands that can overwhelm an already hardworking nervous system.

When the world is too loud, bright or fast
Real-life environments are full of unpredictable sounds, movements and social cues. Screens give autistic children control — over brightness, volume, pace and interactions — helping their sensory system settle rather than overload.

When communication becomes easier
Online spaces often feel more manageable because they remove the pressure to interpret facial expressions, tone or fast back-and-forth conversation. Screens offer clarity and time, reducing social anxiety and supporting genuine connection.

When 'special interests' come alive
Autistic passions are powerful regulators. Screens allow uninterrupted exploration of these interests, offering joy, comfort and identity-building in a world that often misunderstands them.

When understanding creates compassion
Seeing screen engagement through an autistic lens shifts us away from fear-based narratives.

A common question parents often ask me is, "When will my child start talking?"

It's important for families to understand that there are a variety of skills that need to be learned, BEFORE a child is able to successfully communicate.

Adult-child interaction is key in teaching children the foundation of speech and language development.

This depicts these specific building blocks needed for a child to be able to produce words:

◾️PRE-VERBAL & EARLY INTERACTION
◾️ATTENTION & LISTENING
◾️PLAY SKILLS & SOCIAL INTERACTION
◾️RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE
◾️EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE
◾️SPEECH SOUNDS

Now this does not necessarily mean that a child needs to follow this hierarchy in order to be able to understand language, etc. Some of these skills may not be mastered in the exact order of this pyramid.

💬What part of the pyramid is your child at?

Also, please don't feel discouraged if your child is not yet at the top of the pyramid. Focus on the progress of what your child is able to do, rather than turning it into a competition!💗

Napakasymbolic ng waiting para sa autism community.

Wait List

Unahin na natin sa assessment ng Developmental Pediatrician. Mahirap magpaschedule, 95% nasa wait list muna kayo. It can even take years. Yes. Plural.

Waiting Time

Madalas mong maririnig ang salitang “waiting time”. This pertains to our kids’ ability to wait or lack of it, to understand that there’s a structure and sequence to things.

Kids with autism are usually visual beings, it’s a struggle for them to understand concepts that are abstract such as time. It’s always about the now, hence the challenges brought by waiting.

Pero sa lahat ng waiting, ito ang pinakapaborito ko:

Ang mga magulang na nag aantay sa labas ng center.

Sa mga therapy centers, you’ll meet all sorts of parents and guardians. Iba iba. Pero lahat yan, you’ll sense the faith and desperation seeping through the silence as they wait.

Habang lahat nag aantay para sa mga anak na matapos ang therapy session, OT man o Speech o ABA o SPED, we’re also waiting for grander often daunting things.

Yung matawag na mommy at daddy.
Yung mapotty train.
Yung makihalubilo sa ibang bata.
Yung matuto magsulat.
Yung matuto magsintas.
Yung matuto mag yes at no.
Yung matuto sumagot sa WHAT, WHERE, WHO, WHEN, at higit sa lahat sa WHY.
Yung magkaron ng eye contact.
Yung magkaron ng sense of danger.
Yung matutong magmanage pag nagkakaron ng sensory overload.
Yung wag na umiyak next session.
Yung magtry nang kumain ng ibang food.

Yung hope ng mga magulang sa center? It’s such a driving force for everyone lalo na pag may nakakausap ka.

Nalalaman mo kung gaano kayo kaiba at kapareho. Kung gaano kababaw ang luha nyo, (normal na lang ata may nag iiyakan sa waiting area) kung gaano nyo gusto kumayod ng bonggaaaa dahil mahal ang therapy, at higit sa lahat, kung gaano nyo gusto manatiling malakas at buhay kasi nananalig kang darating din yung time na kakayanin ng mga bata mamuhay ng maayos, mabuti, at may dignidad, all on their own.

Dahil worth it lahat, worth it yung pagod, worth it yung puyat, worth it mag-antay, worth it sila.
