A Repost..

From Dra Joy Gayares, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist: My 2 cents worth on why online and modular classes alike are causing much stress in this "pandemic normal" to both the students and their teachers and what can be done to lessen this stress:

Anthropologists scientifically observed that generations differ from each other and that a new generation is "born" every 14 years. This 2020, those in school thus, belong to Generation Z or iGen (born 1997 to 2012 so are currently 8 to 23 y/o) and majority of their teachers are Millennials (born 1981 to 1996 so are currently 24 to 39 y/o). Both Millennials and iGens have low pain tolerance and have short attention span. The difference between them is that Millennials like to spend on positive experiences while iGens are practical savers yet have FOMO (fear of missing out).

In the face-to-face classes, iGens could easily feel they are not "missing out" on class work or lessons because they could easily ask their seat mate or copy notes/ assignments from their smarter friends in class. Students can help each other in the projects or performance tasks. Frustrations can be laughed off with friends on a day to day basis. They could also easily ask their Millennial teachers about the lesson if they were not able to comprehend it during classes. The Millennial teacher on the other hand, can gladly explain to the students who inquire. Projects or assignments may be placed at a minimum as they can "experience" the students on a day to day basis anyway. Both thus, benefit from the face-to-face interaction.

Unfortunately, with the pandemic still going on and no vaccine yet in sight, face-to-face classes are still unsafe at the present time. Millennials and iGens have been forced to do online classes or give out lessons in modules instead. Social interaction, a necessary ingredient for the Millennials and the iGens alike, has thus been eliminated from the class equation, pushing their "short attention span and low pain tolerance" to prevail. The feeling of frustration is "painful" for the iGens most specially. It pushes them to quit school, or worse, quit life.

So what can be done since online/ modular classes remain the safe method of educating for the meantime? In my humble studied opinion, these are my recommendations:

1. create “support class periods” (in place of the previous “homeroom period”, "library time" or "self-study time") once a week. This will allow students to simply chat or catch up with each other with their homeroom teacher. Millennial teacher can experience the iGen students and at the same time, the iGens don’t go into FOMO. They can have games during this support class period or share stories with each other. Teacher, please remember not to be judgmental, specially to the teens. They are naturally brutally frank and inquisitive during their teenage years.

2. teachers make yourselves available for tutorials or consultations off class hours (Mondays thru Fridays only of course). I know that this is an added effort on your part but as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” This is the time for you to be “Frontliners”, my dear teachers 😊The future of the planet is in your hands as these students are the future generation. Remember, parents of some of these students may have just reached grade 3 and are not capable of helping the students out in understanding their subjects.

3. teachers record your classes and make them available offline so students who have poor internet connections or are on modular modes, do not panic and get stressed or experience FOMO. They can review over and over your lessons anytime when they need to catch up, too.

4. lessen the performance tasks/ assignments to the bare minimum. There is no need to give 12 assignments/ performance tasks per week per subject! There are only 5 days in a week.

5. Depression and Pathologic Anxiety are real. Here are the signs and symptoms to watch out for:
Depression - 5 out of the 9 for at least 2 weeks of:
S- leep distrubance (keeps sleeping or does not sleep at all)
A- nhedonia (wala gana)
D- epressed mood
C- oncentration problems
W- eight changes (loose or gain)
E- nergy loss (feels tired all the time)
E- xcessive guilt
P- sychomotor agitation (brain seems to keep running) or retardation (feels empty headed)
S- uicide thoughts or attempts

or Depression may manifest in a Manic way:
Mania (3 out of the 7 for at least 1 week):

G- randiosity
R- isky behavior (running away, telling a lie, stealing, promiscuity, using prohibited drugs, alcohol binging)
A- gitation (irritable)
F- lightly (thoughts keep jumping)
I- nsomnia
D- istractible (poor concentration)
Talkative

Pathologic Anxiety - palpitations, sweating, obsessions, compulsions, excessive fear, etc

Autism is:

Unable to speak, or maybe speaking too much
Hugging everyone, or disliking touch
Escaping outside,
Or trying to hide
Excitedly flapping
Inappropriate clapping
Autism varies so much

Won't wear a coat, or wears one all year round
Fussy eater, or would eat dirt from the ground
Screaming or humming
Annoyingly drumming
Toys in a line
The same way every time
Autism varies so much

Struggling to learn, or has wonderful gifts
Obsessions of numbers, trains, films or lifts
Spinning around
Throws things on the ground
Constantly spitting
Aggressively hitting
Autism varies so much

Alone without friends, or controls every game
Always looks different, always dresses the same
Swinging on doors
Head banging on floors
Freaks at the dryer
Keeps climbing higher
Autism varies so much.

Can't answer questions, won't do as they're told
In their own world or bossy and bold
Over prepared
Anxious and scared
A spectrum so wide

But they all bring us pride
When autism touches our lives.
I support autism awareness always

Copy & Paste If You Do Too! 🥰❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Support, don’t stare or ridicule, its genuine, and can’t be helped. Support is welcomed, this could be any child, any parents daily struggle, but understanding and patience is a virtue . I support autism awareness... always 💕❤💕

How We Began

“Once you accept that your child will be different, not better or worse, just /different/, that’s the first step”

Acceptance also played an important role in the formation of Leaf Turning. Ms. Maila J. So, our administrator, is a mother of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. When her son was diagnosed in the year 2010, she discovered the limited resources available for children with special needs. This inspired her to collaborate with another parent, and her son’s previous teacher, who helped prepare him to enroll in a mainstream school, to form Leaf Turning Wellness Center. A few years later, they also saw the need for testing services as this was necessary for them to identify the specific areas needed to be addressed in their clients. This led them to developing services for psychological testing and assessment, thus, the name Leaf Turning Wellness and Testing Center.

Currently, Leaf Turning has 1 Psychologist, 3 Occupational Therapists, 2 Behavioral Therapists, and 2 Psychometricians, working with the motto “Discovering Uniqueness, Nurturing diversity.”

Leaf Turning; respecting and cultivating differences since 2014.
