Kailyans, do you look for plastic straws whenever you want to enjoy your favorite drink? Do you ask for a plastic bag when you buy fresh produce in our markets? How many sachets of your instant coffee or shampoo do you buy every morning? After use, the trash we dispose does not disappear immediately. Did you know that it gets degraded and breaks down into microplastics that end up in our waterways, the soil, and even our food? ๐ฅค๐ง๐ฌ
For todayโs posting, we continue with the letter ๐, which stands for ๐๐ข๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ก ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง. The Philippines currently has a population of over 100 million residents, and it consumes at least 163 million sachets daily, with an annual generated 2.7 million tons of plastic waste where a fifth of this amount ends up in our oceans. Most of this trash gets broken down into microplastic particles that could be ingested or inhaled. This makes them capable of carrying pathogens into our bodies. ๐ฆ ๐๏ธ
Climate change intensifies the impact of microplastics on the environment through their degradation and interaction with ecosystems. They even directly emit greenhouse gases and even disrupt the balance of natural carbon sequestration. On the other hand, the primary system for waste control is the use of sanitary landfills, which allow greenhouse gases to be directly released into the atmosphere. ๐ฎ๐

Here in Quirino Province, we have already banned single use plastic bags and polystyrene products by virtue of ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ ๐ง๐จ. ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐๐, otherwise known as ๐๐ง ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ก๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐. As individuals, we can opt to reject single-use plastics, use reusable drinking bottles, recycle when possible, and look for eco-friendly packaging. We could also participate in initiatives such as clean-up drives in rivers and creeks. ๐ฑ๐ณ
We cannot eliminate the use of plastics, but we sure can minimize the amount we use in our daily lives. Together, we can be part of a global approach in reducing waste levels and minimize the effects of climate change. ๐ฟโป๏ธ
