DNA Analysis Laboratory

DNA Analysis Laboratory The laboratory conducts research on DNA testing and population genetics. It offers DNA testing services (parentage, human identification, etc.).

The UP-NSRI DNA Analysis Laboratory is mandated to establish the scientific framework of forensic DNA technology in the Philippines. The laboratory is also equipped to conduct researches on the genetic diversity of Filipinos to study population history and evolution. HISTORY
On May 16, 1996, the MOA between the University of the Philippines and the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission (PACC), represented by the Vice-President Joseph E. Estrada to establish the DNA Analysis Laboratory, was signed. The construction of the UP-NSRI-DAL and installation of equipment were completed in December 1997. EQUIPMENT and INFRASTRUCTURE
The laboratory houses state-of-the-art equipment for DNA analysis. The infrastructure is designed to streamline casework and research for a more efficient, timely and cost-effective approach to any problem. HIGHLIGHT: The Rule on DNA Evidence
The laboratory assisted in formulating the scientific framework of the Rule on DNA Evidence, promulgated on October 15, 2007. This Rule guides Philippine courts of law on the admissibility and probative value of DNA evidence.

We are pleased to inform the UP Diliman community that the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) has granted the UP Diliman Research Ethics Board (UPD REB) a Level 1 Accreditation for a period of one year, effective 03 October 2025 until 02 October 2026.

With this accreditation, the UPD REB is now operational and open to receiving applications for ethics review from UP Diliman.

Level 1 accreditation is a probationary status given to new Research Ethics Boards to acquire experience in the review of research protocols. This level allows UPD REB to review research except clinical trials required for FDA registration of new drugs.

Research involving Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs) must secure clearance from a PHREB Level 2 Accredited REC and coordination with approval from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).

The UPD REB is working towards expanding its capacity to eventually accommodate proposals and protocols involving ICCs and IPs, in recognition of the significant research interest in this area.

PHREB Accreditation Policies and Requirements:

For 2025, ethics review services will be free of charge for all UP Diliman Principal Investigators (PIs), with the generous support of the Office of the Chancellor. Students are exempt from fees. Any changes or prospective review fees for 2026 will be announced early next year.
