Although most individuals are aware of HIV, they may be unaware of how it affects the body. HIV kills CD4 cells (also known as T cells or helper cells), which are important for the immune system. CD4 cells keep humans healthy and prevent them from infections and illnesses. Signs and symptoms will appear as HIV erodes the body's natural defenses. HIV attacks the immune system directly once it has entered the body.

HIV attacks the cells that would ordinarily defend against an invader like HIV. The virus damages or destroys the infected CD4 cell as it replicates, and it creates additional virus to infect more CD4 cells. This cycle can continue without therapy until the immune system is severely weakened, putting a person at risk of catastrophic diseases and infections.

The terminal stage of HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The immune system is severely weakened at this point, and the risk of opportunistic infections is substantially higher. However, not everyone infected with HIV will acquire AIDS. The sooner a person accepts treatment, the better their chances of recovery.

It is bad enough that people are dying of AIDS, but no one should die of ignorance.

- Elizabeth Taylor

How will you know if you have HIV/AIDS? Check out the details below for a guided information:

Excessive weight loss? Don’t be too happy about it.

Skin itchiness? Don’t just say “Nah. It’s nothing”.

Severe sweating at night? That may not be just because of your room’s air conditioning capacity.

If most of these symptoms are present, don’t panic... get yourself checked up for certainty and safety purposes.

All is well until it’s not. Care. Be aware.

DID YOU KNOW?

Since 1983, the world has been celebrating AIDS Candlelight Memorial (ACM). This activity, a program of the Global Health Council, is a gathering and mobilization of different sectors and groups in order to remember and honor those who have passed away due to AIDS and also to eradicate stigma and discrimination through education, advocacy and partnership. Moreover, the Candlelight remains one of the most important civil society-led efforts as it demonstrates the invaluable role communities play in the fight against HIV and AIDS as well as the critical partnership between communities and governments in promoting prevention, treatment and care, not just for HIV, but for other related illnesses and issues.

The Premier Healthline: HIV/AIDS Awareness Ambassadors joins the nation in celebrating the 39th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial with the theme: “We Remember, We Take Action, We Live Beyond HIV”

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, held on the third week of May every year, is not only an opportunity to remember the people we have lost but also to honour those who dedicated their lives to helping people living with and affected by HIV and continue to mobilize our communities in solidarity. This serves as a vital forum for worldwide solidarity, breaking down barriers of stigma and prejudice, and bringing hope to new generations, with around 38 million people living with HIV today.

Together, We Are The Solution!

Heads up! Here’s what you need to know about HIV.

To reduce your risk of HIV, use condoms correctly every time you have s*x. Do not inject drugs. If you do, use only sterile injection equipment and water, and never share your equipment with others. Let us be vigilant and stay healthy because we are responsible with our own actions.

HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug… Heaven knows they need it.

- Princess Diana

What makes a disease scary is not just because of the disease itself, but oftentimes, it’s because of ignorance. People tend to judge a thing because they think they already know about it, but people who are actually knowledgeable don’t judge, they understand.

In most cases, people often get confused about HIV and AIDS, to understand what it is and how it works, below is a simple breakdown of what these are.

HIV and AIDS are dangerous not just to people being infected but to other people who think they already know the disease as well.

We have to understand that only the disease is dangerous, not the people who has it. They need our support and understanding. It is bad enough that they need to fight for it, but they don’t have to fight alone—they have us.
