Can AMD Cause Blindness? Understanding Its Progression

AMD doesn’t cause total blindness, but it can severely affect central vision — the part you use to read, drive, and recognize faces.

Most patients retain side (peripheral) vision, allowing some level of independence. With early diagnosis and proper management, progression can be slowed significantly.

Family history matters — genetics play a strong role in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
If a close relative has AMD, your risk may be 3 to 6 times higher. Other risk factors include:
👵 Age 50 and above
🚭 Smoking
🌞 Excessive sunlight exposure
🍟 Unhealthy diet

Knowing your risk helps you take early preventive steps.

Floaters vs. Flashes: What’s Normal and What’s Dangerous?

Q: Why does sweat sting my eyes and how can I avoid it?

A: Sweat contains salt and other minerals that can irritate your eyes and blur your vision. To prevent this, wear a headband, cap, or sports sunglasses that help wick sweat away. If sweat gets in your eyes, rinse gently with clean water or lubricating drops.
