The 2nd Clinico-Pathologic Conference of the Department of Internal Medicine, NOPH

More than achieving the correct diagnosis lies the journey of how our medical residents utilized available information, how they processed and analyzed and make good concept map to arrive at diagnosis. This also allows collaborative learning among our residents and foster teamwork and humility as they agree on their final diagnosis as a team.

Congratulations to all our residents and consultants for the successful conduct of CPC.
We commend our winners:

Best Speaker: Dr. Julia Julia Therese Cambongga (Level I)

Best Presentation Group:
Dr. Donna Claire Catubig-Nejudne (Level I)
Dr. Julia Therese Cambongga (Level I)
Dr. Rem Lace Balahan Reyes (Level II)
Dr. Shellany Jamaro Luba (Level II)

We are very grateful to our Consultant Judges who played a very critical role in assessing the thought process, understanding and judgment of our residents:

To our Guest Expert, the Chief Fellow of the Section of Infectious Disease of The Medical City, Ortigas, Dr. Karl Vincent Abalajon, we can't thank you enough for sharing your valuable time, effort and expertise in sharing this very interesting case.

Last November 14, we joined the global celebration of World Diabetes Day 2025 and officially launched the NOPH Diabetes Clinic, guided by this year’s theme: “Take on Type 1 Today: Know the Signs, Check Your Levels, Support the Community,” in line with the global call “Access to Diabetes Care – Know your Risk, Know your Response.”

The program opened with an insightful lecture by Dr. Alexander Lacuesta, Level I IM resident, “Take on Type 1 – Understanding and Managing Type 1 Diabetes.” Following this, the NOPH Diabetes Clinic was formally inaugurated under the leadership of Dr. Davie G. Villanueva, Internal Medicine Department Chair and Dr. Proceso Marc Udarbe (Endocrinologist) —made possible through our partnership with Action4Diabetes (A4D).

Attendees were also given free RBS testing, promoting early detection and proactive health monitoring. To close the event, participants added their names to a Commitment Wall, symbolizing their support for individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes and their dedication to raising awareness in our community.

The Action4Diabetes (A4D) organization is a UK-registered charity dedicated to giving health and hope to disadvantaged young people with Type 1 Diabetes by providing free insulin, glucose strips, glucometer and even educational scholarships to deserving students.

Together, let’s continue working toward accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive diabetes care. 💙

We proudly recognize three of our Level II Internal Medicine residents from Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital—Dr. Essel Bangalando, Dr. Ronith Patrice Jasmin, and Dr. Shellany Luba—for representing our institution at the prestigious 20th Asia Pacific Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infection (APCCMI) 2025 last November 2-4, 2025 at ICONSIAM, Bangkok, Thailand.

This 3-day international congress, led by regional and global experts, focused on the growing burden of infectious diseases in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting new insights, emerging pathogens, and evolving therapeutic strategies.

Our residents had the honor of presenting their case reports before an international audience:
🔹 Dr. Essel Bangalando (E-poster presentation)– “A Giant Hepatic Abscess in an Immunocompetent Female: A Rare Presentation with an Unusual Pathogen”
🔹 Dr. Ronith Patrice Jasmin (E-poster and Oral presentation)– “Sepsis Secondary to Rhizobium radiobacter in an Immunocompetent Adult With Ascending Cholangitis”
🔹 Dr. Shellany Luba (E-poster presentation)– “Tuberculous Arthritis Complicating a Gout Flare”

Their participation is not only a personal milestone but also a source of immense pride for the NOPH Internal Medicine Department. From their early years as young doctors—driven by hard work, perseverance, and service to now presenting at an international conference, their achievements serve as an inspiration to the entire NOPH community.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our resident-presenters and their co-authors—Dr. Gamaliel G. Garcia, Dr. Dehuel B. Cuyacot, and Dr. Gideon J. Caballes—for their valuable contributions to these outstanding works.

Your dedication continues to elevate NOPH and inspire the next generation of physicians. 👏💙

It is a true honor for the Department of Internal Medicine, Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, to have one of our own, Dr. Wilfredo Mata Jr., represent our government hospital and the Philippines at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, an international gathering of experts and innovators in gastroenterology.

Dr. Mata’s journey is a remarkable story of growth and perseverance, from his beginnings as a young doctor serving in the remote mountains of Negros Oriental to now standing on the international stage. We remember the early days of our residency program’s journey toward accreditation, when confidence was still being built and dreams were just taking shape. He was one of the two residents we had during the pre-accredited training phase.

As he is soon to enter his third year of training, his international presentation stands as a proud reminder that with perseverance and faith, even the most uncertain beginnings can lead to something truly meaningful.

Congratulations to his dedicated co-authors:
Dr. Angelica Gallespen
Dr. Jacky Vincent Omandam
Dr. Maria Joscel D. Torres
Dr. Aldin Legaspi

Truly, an NOPH pride.

Another high yield discussion on the presentation, diagnostic journey and treatment of TB meningitis.

Central nervous infections are always challenging and requires thorough investigation of the history of the patient and physical examination guiding into the right clinical management.

The disease presentation can vary from asymptomatic chronic colonization to infections of the skin and soft tissue to deep-seated infections like pneumonia, especially in immunocompromised patients.

The case presentation highlights unusual diagnostic journey of a pneumonia case leading to the discovery of a not so common organism, beyond the usual suspects.

This is a good learning opportunity for everyone to always exercise high index of suspicion in non-resolving pneumonia and always look at the entirety of the patient's profile.
