📌 Syphilis: What You Need to Know (Part 2: Diagnosis)

Syphilis cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone. Laboratory tests are needed to confirm infection. Here are the common tests used:

✅ Nontreponemal Tests (Screening Tests)
1️⃣ VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test)
2️⃣ RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin)

- Detect antibodies usually produced in response to syphilis, but NOT SPECIFIC to syphilis alone
- Often used as the INITIAL SCREENING step
- A positive result must be confirmed with another test since it may show false positives
- After successful treatment, results usually turn negative

✅ Treponemal Tests (Confirmatory Tests)
1️⃣ TPHA (Treponema pallidum Hemagglutination Assay)

- Detect antibodies specific to Treponema pallidum
- Once positive, results usually remain positive for life (even after treatment)
- Cannot distinguish between current and past infection

🔍 How They Work Together:
1️⃣ VDRL/RPR positive + TPHA positive → Active or past syphilis infection
2️⃣ VDRL/RPR positive + TPHA negative → Possible false positive, retesting needed
3️⃣ VDRL/RPR negative + TPHA positive → Past or treated syphilis infection

✅ Early and accurate testing is the only way to confirm syphilis and prevent complications.

📌 Syphilis: What You Need to Know (Part 1)

🦠 What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a s*xually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.

It spreads through unprotected s*x (oral, vaginal, or a**l) and can also be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy (congenital syphilis). Congenital syphilis is dangerous—it can cause severe health problems or even death in babies and young children.

👉 If you are pregnant, getting tested for STDs is very important for your health and your baby’s safety.

⚠️ Why is Syphilis Dangerous?

If left untreated, syphilis develops in stages:

1️⃣ Primary Stage (2–12 weeks after exposure)
- A painless sore (chancre) appears on the ge****ls, a**s, or mouth
- Highly contagious
- The sore heals on its own, but the infection remains

2️⃣ Secondary Stage (1–6 months after sore heals)
- Still highly contagious
- Symptoms may include skin rashes (often on the palms and soles, not itchy), fever, and swollen lymph nodes
- Can last for months or even years

3️⃣ Latent Stage
- Usually no symptoms, but the bacteria remain in the body
- Not contagious, but can cause hidden organ damage
- This stage can last up to 20 years

⚠️ About 1 in 5 untreated cases progress further

4️⃣ Late/Tertiary Stage (years later)
- Can cause serious, life-threatening complications
- Damage to the brain, heart, eyes, and nervous system
- May lead to blindness, dementia, seizures, or death

✅ Protect yourself and your loved ones — get tested early, practice safe s*x, and seek treatment when needed. Awareness saves lives.
