How Bracing Works for Scoliosis

Braces are custom-made devices that apply external pressure to the spine to prevent the curve from getting worse. By holding the spine in a straighter, less-rotated position, they influence spinal growth and prevent the curvature from increasing.

The primary goal is to stop the curve from reaching the 50-degree threshold where surgery is often recommended, effectively preventing a more severe curve from developing.

The calf muscles—especially the soleus and gastrocnemius—function as a “second heart” by helping push blood from the legs back toward the heart.

When they contract, the veins are compressed, and one‑way valves ensure blood moves upward. This action supports venous return and prevents blood from pooling in the lower extremities.

If activity is limited, the calf pump weakens, increasing risks of DVT, varicose veins, and chronic venous issues.

Because the soleus muscle is well-suited for endurance, it is particularly effective at sustaining the pump over time.

Strengthening and stretching the calves—via exercises like calf raises and calf stretches—enhances their function, helping maintain healthy circulation, reduce blood pressure, and protect against clot formation.

Modern Technology has truly changed the way we treat our patients today. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been the trend for most if not all surgeons. Though MIS has its advantages, Traditional open surgery remains a reliable approach in treating most of these conditions. The lesser cost of these procedures give patients more accessibility in receiving much-needed care.

Posterior Spinal Stabilization for Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury secondary to Cervical Fracture in Ankylosing Spondylolitis (AS) patient

Patients with AS have a significantly higher risk of spinal fractures (4x) compared to the general population. Fractures often result from low-energy mechanisms like falls from standing height, due to the altered biomechanics and reduced flexibility of the fused spine. Cervical spine fractures are the most common, particularly at the C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels. The fractures are frequently unstable and may extend through the entire width of the spine, increasing the risk of neurological compromise.

Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease (LCPD) is a childhood hip disorder initiated by a disruption of blood flow to the head of the femur. Due to the lack of blood flow, the bone dies (osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis) and stops growing. Over time, healing occurs by new blood vessels infiltrating the dead bone and removing the necrotic bone which leads to a loss of bone mass and a weakening of the femoral head.

A selective nerve root block (SNRB) injection or just nerve block injection is used to both diagnose and treat an inflamed spinal nerve. A medication, typically, an anesthetic or anesthetic with steroid is administered near the spinal nerve as it exits the intervertebral foramen (bony opening between adjacent vertebrae). The medication reduces inflammation and numbs the pain transmitted by the nerve. (https://www.spine-health.com/treatment/injections/selective-nerve-root-block-injections)
