Public Advisory No. 2025-036 | September 30, 2025
In line with the continuous rise of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease cases in the region, the Department of Health Eastern Visayas Center for Health Development strictly encourages all concerned personnel to remain vigilant and implement necessary preventive and control measures within their respective institutions.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral illness affecting individuals across various age groups, frequently among children. While most cases are mild, self-limiting, and not life-threateningβit can still lead to serious complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, or polio-like paralysis if not properly managed.
How it spreads:
HFMD can be spread through direct contact with fluids, including exposure to infected nose and throat secretions or respiratory droplets. It can also be transmitted through contact with the fluid from blisters or scabs, as well as by touching contaminated f***l material or objects.
To ensure the health and safety of learners, school staff, the following preventive measures must be strictly observed and implemented:
A. Promote Proper Hygiene and Sanitation
β’ Encourage frequent hand washing with soap and water. Provide alcohol-based hand sanitizers in classrooms and common areas.
β’ Regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, tables, and learning materials.
B. Strengthen Health Education and Awareness
β’ Conduct information drives on HFMD, including its transmission, symptoms, and prevention. Encourage the involvement of parents and guardians in promoting good hygiene and early symptom detection, such as fever, mouth sores, and papulovesicular skin rash.
C. Implement Infection Control Protocols
β’ Limit the sharing of personal items such as utensils, towels, and toys. Ensure adequate ventilation in classrooms and common areas.
β’ Advise parents and guardians to keep children at home once symptoms persist. A childβs return to school, daycare, and other face-to-face activities shall be contingent upon the evaluation and medical clearnace issued by the attending physician.
β’ Continue practicing Minimum Public Health Standards (e.g., mask-wearing, cough etiquette, physical distancing, and hand sanitation.)
