Prepping for a school training on how apraxia affects more than just speech and how teachers and staff can be more accommodating. This is a BIG one. I see this all the time not only with Ashlynn but with my clients. I was talking with Jordan Fighting for my Voice: My life with Verbal Apraxia who believes there is an anxiety component that contributes and I believe he’s right. Either way, understanding this is symptomatic of apraxia is helpful and necessary for educators to know and understand. 💙💙

This spoke to me because therapy for apraxia can be hard work! As much as praise is definitely needed and necessary, the SLP also plays an important role as coach and encourager. Equally as important is that the the SLP selects targets that aren’t too easy but also not so hard it’s unattainable.

SPEAKING is a PROCESS!

Speaking is a process - there are skills most kids have before they are able to speak and these prerequisite skills are super important - so it’s very typical for therapists to spend a lot of time building these skills -and often difficult for parents to see noticeable progress in. Thanks
