In 1855, an American physician named Herman S. M. Smith created one of the earliest versions by adapting a design that used a mirror to reflect light onto the vocal cords.
However, it was Gustav Killian, a German surgeon, who in 1895 developed a more refined model, incorporating a curved blade that allowed for better access and visibility. Over the years, advancements continued, leading to the development of modern laryngoscopes, which have become indispensable tools for anesthesiologists.
